The Stats Thread

Defoe really should have been top of that goalscorer list by now. Crazy how high Lennon is on appearences at his age, also quite sad that King isn't top of that appearance list, injuries ey?

Twitter / WhoScored: Tottenham: Have allowed their opponents fewer shots (341) than any other team in the Premier League this season

Twitter / WhoScored: QPR, Tottenham, Swansea: The only teams who haven't scored a penalty in the PL this season, though QPR have taken 3 & had all of them saved #-o

Twitter / OptaJoe: 1/2 - Stoke have scored the fewest goals from outside the box (1) while Spurs have conceded the fewest (2) ‏Potshot

Twitter / OptaJoe: 152 - Goals scored from outside the box this season in the PL, with Spurs' 14 being the most by a team. Rifled.

Interesting that Spurs have scored the most goals in matches featuring the Top Five (an average of two per game).

Bloody shame our defence was a bit ropey.

Indeed. For both the Top 5 and Top 8 mini-tables this season Spurs have been the highest scorers but ended up with GD of -2 having conceded the most goals too #-o

At least in the London mini-league we conceded fewer goals than Fulham and Wet Spam \o/

Got me thinking:

We're also the highest scorers against the top half this season with 34 in 18 games, the closest being Arsenal with 30 in 18 although United have 25 in just 16.
Our points per game against the top half is 1.72, third best. Equal to Emirates Marketing Project, and only 0.03 behind United. Although even less (0.01) ahead of Chelsea we're significantly ahead of Arsenal who stand on 1.44 at the moment. Somewhat interesting (to me at least) Both Liverpool and WBA have 1.00 ppg against the top half, only the top 6 have more than one point per game on average against the top half teams.

Unsurprisingly our results against the bottom half teams must be a bit more disappointing. With 29 goals in 18 only West Ham (10th) have fewer goals than us against the bottom half. Although Everton on 33 in 20 aren't far ahead. Somewhat depressingly both Fulham and Wigan are very close to us with 28 in 18 and 28 in 17 respectively. Southampton are also close with 25 in 16.

We're 6th in points per game against the bottom half with 1.94 ppg, the current top 4 and Liverpool all ahead of us. United have a massive 2.85 ppg, but City, Arsenal and Chelsea are all ahead of us with 2.44, 2.28 and 2.11 respectively.

I guess this all reflects the disparity in our ability to attack on the counter and our ability to attack against teams who get men behind the ball and defend deep. It's the same when you compare our goals scored home and away.

Somewhat apt what with Wigan and Fulham both winning 1-0 at WHL this season.

Indeed, only WBA in the top half of the table have scored fewer goals in home fixtures this season whilst only ManU have scored more than us on the road. Not entirely surprising considering we lost the combined creative passing abilities of Modric, VdV, Corluka and Kranjcar with all of them being replaced with superior athletes.

We're tenth in terms of touches in the box (ninth in term of touches in the final third). That screams a counterattacking style - we're not exactly pinning teams back in their third even at the Lane - not dissimilar to MON's 6th-place finishes with Villa or Saudi Sportswashing Machine last season, rather than a true "Top Four" quality team. Those teams are typically possession-oriented, 'suffocating' the midfield and pushing teams back because they are so technically superior, even if sometimes fragile at the back.

If we want to consistently create more chances at home, we'll need more subtle passers rather than direct players.

It is amazing the league record since January are almost equal between Arsenal, Chelsea and us.

Arsenal : played 18, won 11, drew 4, lost 3 = 37 points
Chelsea : played 18, won 10, drew 4, lost 4 = 34 points
Spurs : played 17, won 9, drew 6, lost 2 = 33 points

We have actually lost fewer matches than both Arsenal and Chelsea which is amazing. The big setback for us was we drew too many matches. But I still think the loss to Fulham at home was the one which destroyed our CL hopes. Unfortunately for us, Jol has managed to get the sweet revenge on Levy and us.

Yup, such are the fine margins between glory and failure...

Twitter / WhoScored: Arsenal are on the longest current unbeaten streak in the Premier League (8 9 games), ahead of Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool (7)

Aside from that loss at home to Fulham, it is Wigan who have been our main bogey side this season. As whilst we took only 1pt from our 2 games against them, Wigan gave up 6pts to everyone else in the Top 5: ARSEnal (4-1 and 1-0), Chavski (4-1 and 2-0), Emirates Marketing Project (1-0 and 2-0), ManU (4-0 and 4-0).

Just have to hope that Saudi Sportswashing Machine finish their season in the same manner that they started it, with a win at home to a North London side [-o<

So before Arsenal got 33pts, we got 36 pts and Chelsea got 38 pts? Been pretty tight all season...

We got some bad injuries to key players. That certainly influenced results such as that against Fulham, where we were missing the width provided by Lennon.

I'd argue that Europa (in particular the extratime in that demoralizing Inter game) played a major factor in that sluggish performance against Fulham.

Arsenal have a pretty big advantage in the run-in because they're always out of the cups by March, leaving them with a clear run to the finish line.

I felt as if some players didn't give their all against Fulham out of respect and sympathy for Jol. That was the same feeling against Redknapp's QPR.

Just imagine, if not for the moment of panic by Caulker against Everton, the stupidity by Walker against Liverpool and our lacklustre performance against Fulham, we would be unbeaten in 25 matches since losing to Arsenal in December. Other teams have also got their fair share of disappointments this season. But we have really wasted a golden chance to fight for league title this season. It is a pity we might have nothing to show for our performance this season.
