The overrated films thread

Good to see someone name ET, I went to the cinema to watch the new Special Edition, not having seen it in years and thought that it was crap. I was disappointed that it had rained on my enjoyment of the film which stemmed from when I was a kid. I guess the film isn't overrated though as most likely it is a film which has been created primarily for children.

I agree with this.

Practically any Tarantino movie for me. The only one that was any good was the one he didn't direct. Pulp Fiction has some good stories, but also some utter garbage. Compared to "proper" movies like Goodfellas or Casino, Reservoir Dogs was utter utter toilet.

I can't understand anyone who doesn't love that movie but it does appear to split people wide apart in terms of opinion. I love the movie, one of those that I went to the cinema to watch more than once.

Possibly the most disappointing film i've watched, just dog brick.

I watched Inception the first time when I was tinkled, and kept nodding off.
So I watched it again sober and saw it all the way through.

On balance watching it tinkled and falling asleep was a better way to do it.

Sixth Sense and Memento were both good early films of Nolan and Shamalamadingdong and they both seemed to get more head up their own arse in trying to better them, and in my view have just got worse.

Don't understand why people have a problem with sixth sense, whats not to like?

Overrated for me is coming out of a film you were really looking forward to seeing and feeling like you were just dumped by someone you cared for

the last 3 Star wars films in particular, American Beauty is another good example

It's a boring pretentious movie that had a great ending. But you can't watch it twice, unlike say The Usual Suspects which holds its own even knowing the ending.

I was born in 81, so the Goonies was one of the best films ever when I was a kid.

Noticed it was on over Christmas so recorded it, it was almost as good as I remembered and my 7 year old daughter absolutely loved it (so much so we had to get the DVD for her)

Don't get me started on Inglorious Basterds.... love Jackie Brown though, that's in my top ten favourite films.

I enjoyed Sixth Sense, but have made a pledge never to watch anything now by M Knight Shimmyshimmycocopop because it is almost always utter utter drivel.

Gran Torino. Love Clint and loved his prior film The Changeling. Huge hype and positive criticism. The film was so cobbled together and unevenly toned.

what do you mean by pretentious, and where in the film is there any sign of it?

Its not a word that readily springs to mind watching it. The thing for me is that just about all of his other films are - because they are pretending to be as good as sixth sense, and they are not - by a million miles.

I've watched Resevoir Dogs twice now and I still don't 'get' it. It doesn't capture me like Pulp Fiction does, and I didn't really have a connection with any of the characters.
