The "If we go down" thread

On the positive front we would have Championship ready players, Devine, Lankshear and Phillips also on the positive side no more after match post mortems on MOTD the EFL highlights on ITV are so much better without pundits and Talksport will have lost one of their prime talking points , I don't listen to them but do they go on about QPR, Millwall etc like they do about Spurs.

This is only news because it's Spurs, it's nothing special that Levy has done - all clubs insert such clauses and if it was Man U or whoever in this position the same story would come out.

Was only a month ago they were mentioning it about West Ham:

It's still good to hear as it was being questioned on here not so long ago

Talksport and the others would still revel in taking digs at us. I don’t think it matters what league we are in, we seem to be the universal whipping boys who are always going to take a kicking no matter what they do.

Made my peace with relegation actually being a fun opportunity. We have so many good young players, so Lange’s kids will finally get a chance to shine.

Add a bit of Champ quality, keep the players that would be willing. I think it would be fine. And everything that is true today about the strength of our non TV revenue would still be true when we get promoted, so hopefully we can spend our way back to the top half fairly quickly.

I could see Madders staying for example. After a big injury getting back up to speed in a lesser league would be good for him. Hopefully a few others. Make Gray captain.

I think unfortunately for this squad we’ve become a bit of a drag on their lives. There’s not enough alignment, there’s not enough reason for all of them to want to be at Spurs together, other than the fact that they are on decent money. My worry is that we’ve become the place where ‘good enough’ players get the best possible money they can get, rather than attracting truly top class. Because our players know that ENIC will never truly invest to get to the top level, and as long as they’re here, it’s a pointless endeavour. And so in a sense relegation would be a helpful reset.

To have a young core that actually wants to be at the club again, that sees impressing at Tottenham as a great opportunity. I think we can rebuild the culture and that way, and it won’t feel like such a drag for all concerned.

Also a side note but the valuation that ENIC have lovingly watched increase to a ridiculous extent based on everything but football success will be pierced. And I will laugh. Because even if we get promoted again, brand Tottenham will no longer be associated with a glamorous London club that is one of the big boys. We’ll be a newly promoted side. And they will have to reckon with the consequences of allowing us to fall so behind.

The last sentence particularly seems a bit like slicing off your nose to spite your face...

I feel a bit sick when I think of relegation. It's not something I ever thought I'd see once we'd established ourselves in the top 6. It's coming between me and my night's sleep a bit. The humiliation. Spending a year (or more) out of the limelight. No longer being a big 6 club even if only in name. It terrifies me.

However, I don't think it'll be the doomsday scenario some are painting it. Life will go on. Tottenham will continue to exist. It'll still be our club. If we go down, we go down and we'll deal with it but until it's a certainty, the prospect should be worrying everyone of Lilywhite persuasion IMO.

Can't see it being much fun, could be the start of a long time in the wilderness if other teams' experience is anything to go by.

Hopefully it's plenty more than 50% and the players will have got royally Levied for getting us relegated.

Being relegated will not be fun.
It will be terrible for our finances, for keeping players, for attracting players, for sponsorship, for so many things. You might be able to laugh because ENIC lose some value on paper but relegation will not be a laughing matter. And there is no guarantee we get promoted straight back.

Sounds like it's become a drag on yours!

Sort yourself out you defeatist. :)

I swear the fans are half the problem.
No coincidence it's the home form that's gone to brick.

I like this rather romantic view, and I’ve been trying to adopt it myself. I don’t think the Championship will be particularly fun necessarily, and I obviously don’t want us to get relegated - but it’s not the end of the world, and as you say - it could be the hard reset we need. There is something more authentic about the football down in the leagues. Not sure we would get a rub of that necessarily, with our fancy ass stadium and billion pound players, but it’ll be something else, at least, a new experience.

Me 20 years ago would be crushed by this prospect, but I find that I’m not all that upset by it now - too much personal brick taking up the worry-quota, I guess. We’ll be fine.

We really won’t be fine!

So maybe it isn't only news because it's Spurs...in that it would be the same for whoever.
Ha yeah, I mean it's literally not news it's just the status quo :D

All big club will have those clauses in for security, incase of instances such as this 😕....

Sheffield Wednesday...Leicester...Blackburn...West Brom...we're bigger than all of them, I suppose, but once you go down no guarantee your're coming up quickly again - or at all.

It would be an absolute disaster in so many ways.

Thankfully, I think we'll be okay - just.
