The Game Is About Glory Podcast

I've made a silly little game. It's based on Play Your Cards Right but with Spurs goalscorers. It's still a little rough around the edges, so grateful for any feedback and let me know your highest scores

Good game, good game…

Yea nice one Milo.

Can I make a suggestion though and I’m not trying to be annoying,.. but is it possible to have the option to segregate the women’s from the men’s? It becomes a bit of a lottery otherwise, I mean, the last 5 or 6 years I’d have a decent idea of the women’s players, but prior to that you could literally just be making those names up for all I know!

Could have filters like “combined”, “men’s”, “women’s”, lets everyone decide which game they want to play.

Getting Better
Season 7 - Episode 14

Steff and Milo look back at the Old Trafford robbery where measly Man Utd pinched an undeserved draw against the mighty, resurgent THFC. We also revel in the intelligence and decency of our players, and how unreliable German journos aren't worth listening to.

Interesting pod, couple of things I would like to pick up on.
Milos comments about Tel and reaction on SM, I've often had the same experience with him.
The real difference will come when we have someone in the middle who can not only put his chances away but by giving the defence something else to worry about allow more room for tel.
Also see comments about bad decisions, well when most of his options are a bit meh they are going to look bad at times.

Andy Robertson, I never wanted, Imo his legs are gone and his presence in the dressing room was going to be a difficult one to get over.
Speaking from personal experience I know how Glaswegians of a certain type come across, our demeanour , accent and general attitude is perceived as aggressive and confrontational, our reputation goes before us. I couldn't believe that would fit into our dressing room.
I was wrong.
Age has certainly caught with him, but not to the extent that I believed.
Also looks like he has been self aware enough to not go in as we would say with his "tacky boots on".
I commend him for that.

Training Day
Season 7 - Episode 17

Steff, Milo, and Gareth discuss the delights of a routine smothering at the Lane against Crystal Palace, reflect on how far this group has come in a short amount of time, and celebrate a great cameo PL debut by Luca William-Barnett….he’s one of our own! We also discuss a powerful inhouse interview with Deki, and celebrate Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or

I agreed with @thfcsteff assessment that RDZ got rid of some players who were not going to be bought in. Namely Vuskovic & Spence.

Fans tend to try and keep it simple and focus on one root cause and that is rarely ever the actual case. I think Milo's point was citing finances as one big reason Vusokovic left as there was big money on the table. He also compared the tactical capability (in a Roberto system) when compared to van Hecke and saw that as a second root cause and important to the evolutionary step we've taken. I'm just not sure Milo felt that his motivation to stick around and embrace Roberto's project was as much a biggie as the other two. Perhaps it is, perhsp it isn't.

Generically, I think the reason about a player being bought into the club's project (or not) is an interesting one. Players can clearly flip flop between and change their disposition very qiuckly. Take Senesi as an example. He may have started this season completely bought into this manager's project. He may exit this season thinking that Bournemouth was a better gig as he played all the time. He might have a decent size club in another country offering him a new experience. He might feel he needs to move as he gets to the twlight of his career. Spurs might think we got him for nothing and can get £15-20m for him and repurpoise the budget. This season though, he's bought in and if VDV left or got injured then he could be massively motivated again next season.

If there was one place I felt a little uncomfortable on the pod was perhaps the assumption that we can find another passing midfielder quite easily in January to cover for Fernandez. We've been here before with guys like Hojbjerg who could pass pretty well but can't run, is slow as an ox and gets passed around all game. We then have to change the system to accomodate him and have moments where we catching him walking over the half way line as the ball hits our net. It's OK though, he can pass the football. Perhaps Pierre is the extreme case but I'm interested to know where we find a backup for Fernandez that has a healthy dose of all the attributes to play in that centre midfield position at the top end of the PL, with an emphasis on passing and tempo setting etc. For me, they're not quite unicorns but they aren't so common. Also, when you look at the stats, most of them are already at the big clubs. Would love to see some realistic names.

For sure and we will never really know for sure. Even when you get insider info it’s going to be from that persons or their sources perspective as well.

I could see Senesi being flipped. But he will be a great asset in European games. Even the UCL Legaue Phase now your only player 5/6 of the teams your going to play would be getting relegated from the Prem.

Re Fernandez cover. I think you will struggle to find someone better than Bentancur to fill that role.

There is never one specific reason when more than one person is involved.
I introduced the item as a major factor, and still believe it is, but of course there are also stylistic differences between JP and Vuskovic (discussed on previous pods - to be fair, we have consistently maintained that this deal was the right one for this club at this time with this manager). It is clear that he saw JP as of imperative importance as a character as well as a player. I think it is safe to say that when a 19 year old (via their agent) talks of requiring regular first team football they are laying a marker for themselves (not criticizing Vuskovic per se, he has to back himself) however I'm pretty confident it helped seal the deal.

When you look at the squad right now, you don't see anyone who has even the character-rep of showing discontent if not in the starting 11. Even with Richy, it seems clear that RDZ weighed up the potential benefits of a few goals he might bring versus the potential disruption, and concluded it was best he was not near the squad in that regard.
I agree that finding the combination of a player with Fernandez's qualities who is prepared to be a squad player is going to be very tough.

On a side note, I find it curious that Spence has played so little since his move?
