Bale Madrid! Spanish giants Real secure first option on Tottenham's £45m-rated winger

Jose Mourinho will get the first opportunity to buy should Spurs look to cash in on the 23-year-old, who only signed a new deal in June

First option: Real Madrid would get the first chance to buy Bale if Spurs put him up for sale

Real Madrid have secured first option to buy Gareth Bale.

Bale signed a new four-year contract with *Tottenham in June – but he has been the *subject of constant transfer speculation during the last three years.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United have all been linked with the 23-year-old who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s outstanding talents. In the wake of Luka Modric’s transfer to Real last week, the clubs announced that they had formed a new alliance.

In a statement, it was *revealed this will involve “players, coaches, best practices and commercial relationships”.

It is also thought that Jose Mourinho’s Real will now get the first chance to sign Bale should either *Tottenham *decide to cash in on their *valuable asset or if the player asks to leave.

The asking price for Bale will be around £45million but Spurs would have the chance to choose from Real’s talented squad in any deal.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have confirmed that winger Aaron Lennon has signed a new *contract, which commits him to the club until 2016.

The 25-year-old has played more than 230 matches in all competitions for Spurs since joining from hometown club Leeds in 2005.

He has started both Barclays Premier League matches for Andre Villas-Boas’ side this season. Lennon, who netted four times for Tottenham in all competitions, was part of *England’s World Cup squad two years ago.

However, he did not figure in this summer’s European *Championships.

There had been rumours in recent weeks that Lennon may be surplus to AVB’s *requirements, but the new deal silences those claims.

Porto tried to shaft us.

Spurs' last-gasp frustration over thwarted Moutinho transfer bid

Tottenham Hotspur's failure to sign Joao Moutinho on transfer deadline day was caused by a dispute over their principal transfer target's financial terms compounded by Porto's decision to increase their asking price a mere hour before Friday's window closed.

The Portuguese champions are said to have "behaved very badly," according to a participant in the negotiations.

The transfer looked set to go through by mid-afternoon on Friday when Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, agreed a transfer fee of €25 million (Dh112.5m) plus a further €3m in performance-related variables.

Moutinho, whose salary in Portugal is close to €2m net, then rejected the personal terms on offer at White Hart Lane, so Porto instructed the midfielder to fly to the Algarve for Saturday's league match at Olhanense.

Several further rounds of negotiations ensued during which Andre Villas-Boas telephoned Moutinho to persuade him to accept an improved contract offer, ultimately securing the player's consent at 10pm UK time.

Porto, however, refused to complete the deal, asking for a 25 per cent increase in the transfer fee on the basis that the player's financial terms had been improved so theirs should be, too.

Infuriated by Porto's brinkmanship but anxious to furnish his new coach with the strongest squad possible, Levy increased the total value of Tottenham's offer to €30m.

Though Porto agreed to these terms 10 minutes before England's 11pm deadline, contractual documents they provided to the Premier League contained errors that could not be rectified in time to complete the transfer.

At 11.30pm, Tottenham conceded defeat on the deal.

While Tottenham may move for Moutinho again in the January window assuming Porto do not sell him to Zenit St Petersburg this week, the club are generally satisfied with their business in the summer window.

Liverpool were outbid for Clint Dempsey on Friday night, and they see the £6 million (Dh34.8m) United States international as a more dynamic version of Rafael van der Vaart - sold to Hamburg for £4m more.

Villas-Boas is said to regard Moussa Dembele as an ideal replacement for Luka Modric, with the Belgium international possessing a similar ability to create scoring opportunities and drive possession forward.

Also acquired from Fulham last week, Dembele cost £15m, while the unsettled Modric was sold to Real Madrid for an initial €30m, a further €8m in variables, and a cooperation agreement including two lucrative friendly matches between the club.

Meanwhile, Tom Huddlestone will look to secure an overseas loan move this week with the French, Russian and Turkish windows still open for incoming transfers.

The Tottenham midfielder wants regular first-team football as he seeks to complete his recovery from a recalcitrant ankle problem. While Benfica inquired about Huddlestone's availability to replace the outgoing Javi Garcia last week and agreed financial terms on a season-loan with Tottenham, the Portuguese club failed to complete the deal.

The French and Turkish transfer windows remain open until Wednesday, Russia's until Friday.

Re: Porto tried to shaft us.

Yes this story may have been dropped into the lap of the reporter by a member of the board, but it just goes to show that in transfer dealings it takes 2 parties to make a successful deal. Porto were out to shaft us for every penny due to the Modric deal. Trying to conclude this deal any earlier would not have mattered as the value would have continued to escalate. It needed the end point of the transfer window to bring conclusion. Let's just hope for January.

But the story suggests, they eventually accepted our bid and we simply ran out of time to revise their spelling errors or whatever the fudge they (supposedly) got wrong

Playing devil's advocate - but if this circus started 2-3 days prior, perhaps we could have had him. Just a thought. Hell, we could have stareted the day Real Madrid signed Modric.

I really don't udnerstand this last minute shuffle we always undertake - it's like betting large on 0 when playing roulette - if it comes off - massive return but chances are generally against you

Domey - a transfer deal of this magnitude should not have waited till last day.

I think Levy has a reputation now and he better get used to all this brinksmanship because he has been giving it for years. you can say its despicable but did Levy not do a similar thing the previous day with Lyon and Lloris?

Yes but Levy can spell so does not delay deals at the last minute

I agree with this - he was our no.1 target all summer, and the fact we left it more or less to 'chance' in the last 2 hours is inexcusable, imv

Even if the justification was to wait for Modric's fee first (done alomst 10 days prior!) - we waited for the last day (again) and ultimately paid a higher price

Re: Porto tried to shaft us.

It seems to me that the "mistakes" in the legal paperwork forwarded to Tottenham from Porto were entirely deliberate and it was simply a means to hold on to their player at any cost.

I don't think so - because else they would have quoted us 40m and his agent wouldn't have bothered coming to London at all

What I mean is that they knew that the window was closing so also knew we had an end point. If we had been trying to conclude this earlier it would have been a case of bid and counterbid until we walk away at say 35mill. We'd still have returned to the table on the last day of the window in the same position, unless we just gave up on him entirely and got in someone else.

I'm sure the same mistake won't be made in January if he is still around. And by mistake, I mean by Porto.

Tottenham Hotspur missed out on Porto’s Joao Moutinho by minutes
Tottenham Hotspur came within minutes of signing Joao Moutinho for a club record £24 million after agreeing a fee for the Porto midfielder and submitting initial paperwork to the Premier League.

However, the deal could not be completed by the deadline of 1am yesterday. Spurs were granted an extra hour beyond the midnight cut-off on the final day of the transfer window because they had submitted a so-called 'deal sheet’ to the Premier League by 9pm.
The extension is common practice — Fulham were granted a similar addition as they tried and failed to sign Wilson Palacios from Stoke City on Friday night — but the deal was also complicated by third-party ownership issues.
The failure to sign Moutinho comes as a blow to Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas who had identified the 25 year-old as the man he wanted to replace Luka Modric, who was sold to Real Madrid on Monday — as revealed by The Sunday Telegraph last weekend — for £33 million.
Porto had accepted Spurs’ bid after it was raised to their €30 million (£24  million) asking price. But with Porto having paid Sporting Lisbon €11  million (£9 million) for Moutinho, his former club was due 25 per cent of the profit (£3.8 million) while an investor was also due 15 per cent of the overall fee (£3.6 million).
Porto had reluctantly agreed to sell – partly because Moutinho had pushed for the deal and also because they needed to raise their revenues after Hulk remained at the club. Spurs planned to complete the Moutinho deal in addition to signing Clint Dempsey for £6 million, and had they succeeded would probably have sent Tom Huddlestone to Fulham on loan.

Villas-Boas said: “We were covered for the fact it could not happen bearing in mind it was a difficult club to deal with and would have been a club record fee.
"We agreed the player terms late but there were situations regarding the contract that were not right so we didn’t complete the transfer but we have cover enough and Moutinho’s transfer not happening should not overshadow that we got one of the biggest coups of the transfer market with Dempsey.
“Now we have a rest to the transfer speculation and look forward to getting the team right.”
On a hectic deadline day, Tottenham and Fulham were the only two clubs to use the Premier League’s 'deal sheet’ system for especially late transfers. But Spurs’ hopes were also hit by the fact there was a separate Fifa deadline of midnight.

Re: Porto tried to shaft us.

I'm sure such games are played by many clubs, including ourselves.
While I trust little of what the Lyon chairman says in public, I am pretty sure that we weren't behaving like innocent choirboys throughout the whole Lloris affair.
