Refs being bad seems to be quite consistent. This has nothing to do with VAR. The ref on the pitch got it wrong and his mate didn't want to overrule him.
It raises the question about what is a clear and obvious error.
Was it clearly an error? Yes.
Was it obvious? No - too much going on for it be reliably accurate.

Is that an acceptable level at top level sport? Football cannot be accurately, consistently and reliaby officiated by one person on the pitch and two at the side.
