The xG thing reminds me of the formulas used by all those blokes ripping up their betting slips in the bookies.
I can see that. Though I think there's a different similarity too. Probabilistic thinking is rather difficult and not that intuitive for us. So the people who are unable to understand why those formulas at the bookies don't work also will struggle to understand how xG works.

The guys at the bookies always know someone in the know …
Always say betting on animals that can “rigged” much easier than humans
Your issue with football is it’s a Leo scoring sport and a brick team can beat a good team with 2 goal
You don’t get many sports with such small margins
Horse racing you have a minimum number of horses to make it’s a race
Cricket you have a high score, like rugby
Football…. Well we know what can happen
XG is purely data after all and a number doesn’t lie

Numbers don't but the interpretation can be viewed in many ways, I can get all the data I need on a car but would never buy one without test driving it. I understand they can be useful tools to professionals in their jobs but they give so much fuel to the "experts" on the game to drone on about the reason on results and performance, the use of stats by fans just suck the joy out of the game, as does the constant need to blame someone,

XG to account for the cumulative good chances a team makes can make some informed decision, the issue is, the eyes will tell you as much if not more in a game than the stat IMO. Also it doesn't account for individual human brilliance which although we have been starved of recently happens in football. It maybe why these coaches nearly all to a man are now playing to the stats and trying to square a ball on a near open goal than asking players to take shots because they consider the XG too important. I would much prefer coaching be human and technically lead than stats, because the products going downhill fast
