You have to wonder how many cases like this exist from this dark and ugly era.

Yeh, especially when you considering other institutions like the Magdalene Laundries, who basically did things with near on impunity from the law.

Technology has got us past the need for groups for survival. Empathy, guilt, etc these are all empty and pointless feelings that will hold us back.

Not how evolution works. How and why would there be selection against it? Unless everything is IVF, gamete donors.

You think women are going to choose empathy-free individuals to have children with to such an extent that it becomes a major factor?

There needs to be a selection pressure for a trait to establish or disappear.
