Set-Piece - Shooting Specialist

100% agree. Great Analysis. Dubaispur should be in charge of corners and freekicks

Who're the players more likely to listen to, me with my boring analyses or Redknapp with his 'run about a bit and then go home' spiel? I wouldn't be the most popular person at the Lodge, per se. :ross:

Something I thought I'd never say, but we miss Bentley when it comes to set pieces.

In a similar thread a month or so ago, people had to be reminded of the last time Bentley had a short spell in the side... For about 3 games straight every corner and cross got about 2 foot off the ground and didn't even get past the first man... so much so that he was getting abuse!

He def used to be good at set pieces but I think he was another that we ruined.

Gylfi effin' Sigur??sson. You could make the argument he's the best dead ball kicker in the Premier League. He's been excellent in the Championship, did very well in Germany before that idiot of a manager took over at Hoffenheim and he's been superb for Swansea - 2 assists and 3 goals in 7 games. He's only 22 so if we buy him in the summer he could replace Krancjar(if he wants first team football) and have him take over from VdV when he starts slowing down.

Now sure, alot of this is Icelandic bias, but i firmly believe he's going to be a big, big name in the coming years. http://www.101greatgoals.com/gvideos/wigan-0-swansea-2-gylfi-sigurdsson-with-2-golazos/

I was gonna post a thread on this.

When we get set pieces I would rather stick a needle in my japs eye and a snooker cue in my ass at the same time than watch our set pieces. They are grotesque they are that brick.

I wish we had an NFL rule just for us - we can bring on a kicker whenever we want. I dont know why we are SO brick.

Set pieces are crucial - look at Utd they did jack brick yet got a corner and scored it and gave them a platform. Wolves did the same against us.

Sigurdsson is fantastically talented with the ball at his feet, so that would be why we buy him, if we eventually do. Not for his dead-ball ability, because like I said before, it doesn't matter if you're a hybrid of Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Cristiano fudging Ronaldo; if you don't practise consistently, you forget all about how to take a set piece in no time, and we don't practise.

We are hopeless at set pieces. Free kicks, corners, even bloody throw-ins! Towards the end of today's match, United players weren't even making an effort to stop the ball going out for corners -- they knew that it'd give them a breather, and they'd have the ball back after a couple of seconds.

Practice, practice, practice. That's all it is. I refuse to believe that players as classy as those who currently wear the shirt can't put in a corner that beats THE FIRST SODDING MAN, or a free kick that drops invitingly into the 6-yard box. Either they suddenly turn s**t as soon as they're given a dead ball, or we just don't have any routines.

It's f***ing ridiculous.

I accept that there's only so much time players can spend training before their effectiveness is compromised, and that a lot of our beautiful forward play only comes from a lot of work on the training ground...but at least spend a little more time working on basic set piece drills?!

Definitely a problem area for us (at both ends though). But on the attacking side just compare Ashley Young's deliveries with our own. His are lethal and make the defensive team really have to work hard, ours are pretty terrible really. Modric is an absolutely great player, but he is not the one for our set-pieces.

Thing is that, yes we do need to practice set pieces, but perhaps we have been practicing, and improving, other parts of our game that have been instrumental to our push for top three this season.

Still, we do need to work on defending and set pieces more; we are brick at defending now and make basic mistakes far too often, like the switching off and not closing down quick enough.

We should get more from corners, but goals from free kicks are rare for any club.

As for practicing them... this is down to the players to become an expert. No one specifically told Beckham to practice, he spent hours doing this in his own time.

Why are we so bad at set plays?

I've seen our corners discussed on here many times, and heard the rumour that we don't practice corners. Almost every opposition corner is dangerous, yet our own seem to come to nothing.

Not to mention how players known for their free kicks, seem to come to play for Spurs and lose all their ability in that area.

This season especially, i've noticed the throw ins, when we have the ball, there seems very little movement from other players, they don't make themselves free for the throw and often it goes to the opposition. Infact when we have a throw in our half it seems to actually be an opportunity for the opposition. Today was a good example of what can happen with defending throws when we switch off.

So why are we so bad at set plays? or is it just a fan's myopia and just looking at the negatives, and are no worse than other teams?

My first reaction would be to say no Bale or VDV, because with Modric you can have "airy-fairy 5mph floater to the edge of the box" or "hit the first defender". However, we really have been pretty brick at them for a while.

VDV and Bale are brick. Modric is terrible. Kaboom shouldnt take another. BAEs effort today was actually our best this season I think.

Kranjcar can provide decent corners and free kicks when he is on the pitch.
Oh and someone needs to seriously tell Kaboul to stay the fudge away from freekicks.Thinks he is some sort of Alex or Roberto Carlos but I have never seen him a FK on target

Let BAE take all free kicks. Don't get excited when we get a free kick around the box. Honestly don't.

Rose took some corners which actually threatened against Stevenage IIRC.

Thing is, Benny seems to be better than VDV or Bale but will not be arsed enough to grab the ball of the other two gazed with premonitions of their names in the headlines when Benny isn't really that bothered about such things...

Well, i'm a bit rusty actually, I haven't played for a few years....... Oh you mean that Benny... :-"

I agree, though his free-kick was pretty good today, and regarding my comment with the throw ins - BAE often takes them, but many times doesn't seem to have many choices - Bale and Modric just seem to stroll over to him.
