Quitting Cigarettes

GinolaGinolaGinola; quit now while you still can

If you saw your sister/brother/mother dabbling with crack you would stop them. Cigarettes are not crack, but they are addictive and they will probably kill you.

Ok Bullet. Done. After this 20, I don't need to smoke I know this and I can actually not smoke if i want to, its just recently I have wanted them more….

I started smoking when I went on a lads holiday around 3 years ago. I have smoked since although altered in the amount I have. My mother smokes and my dad has never touched a cigarette in his life. I remember as a kid how hard a time I gave my mum about smoking... funny how tables turn, huh?

Anyways I find the people your surround yourself with being a massive influence on encouraging you to smoke or not. A few mates of mine are smokers. They are my biggest hurdle is when socialising with them and seeing them light up. I also like smoking and enjoy having one after eating or when I have a coffee.

Either way it's unhealthy and unattractive. I've decided a couple of days ago I want to quit and become more healthy. Today has been my second successful day of not smoking and I have also just invested in an electric cigarette (Vaporiz Tank it's called).

The urge to smoke on the first day was terrible and I came close to letting in but you just need to fight through it.

This weekend will be my real test. If I get through it I'm pretty sure I can stay off them.

Best of luck to others trying to quit.

PS. for those new to smoking or are at the early stages; Take some advice from people like me. I wish I never started and so do 99% of smokers out there. You are talking £8 a packet these days and I have spent thousands on damaging my health and it will take many years to repair my lungs (and they will never be as perfect as they were before I smoked). My fitness has become affected and my skin and teeth have signs of deteriation (although minor) but had I continued this would only get worse. When I started I thought I could control it and use it as stress relief. After time you become a regular user as your brain adjusts to the nicotine intake.

STOP WHILE YOU CAN.

day three - dfficult but doable - more difficult because I was at home.

As scara said - everything was more enjoyable with smoking and now? not so much.

I did go into my bedroom to get my cigs then realised i dont smoke and dont have any. I went in there out of habit. I laughed on the way back from bedroom haha.

Thanks mate. I think ive been successful thus far as I havent read any of your AVB posts in a while - those always made me smoke packs a day dude.

This is like my own personal diary - a way to vent perhaps.

To be fair, yours and a few others have almost made me start!!!!!! ;)

Yeah vent away mate, vent away…I have gone through a major health kick at 46 which is sort of crazy. I was told by my doc to cut my blood sugars and fast for diabetic reasons, I lost 20lbs in 6 weeks and switched my eating habits, blood sugars were halved, totally normal numbers like anyone else except my body cannot quite process that i have normal numbers now and so sometimes i get light-headed because it thinks my sugars are too low! They checked my heart, did tests, all of it, heart is solid as a rock and circulation strong/good blood work, all of that... Been told it's an adjustment period which I just need to be work through as I find the dietary stuff which works for me (no medication)…I don't mind telling you how ****ed off I was that I'm at my fittest in years only to have dizzy spells, but they've been getting less and less now…

So yeah…vent away mate and keep on going!

20lbs? so youre what now? 280? haha. Mate youre never too old to get healthy and stuff... I didnt have you down as 46 though - maybe a testament to you haha. Your body is catching up with the way you lived. Its like footballers or ex footballers rather and sportsmen in general, their body is so used to exercising that when its stopped exercising and the diet remains the same they put on weight... most are all fat bastards now. Your body is catching up.

ps - yeah this is my diary

To be fair, my crazy years were when I was much younger, been a very well-behaved chap for a long time now, but yeah, in the 90s I was training like a fiend and carbing up like a lunatic, but the magic combo of age and training saw it matter not one jot. That sort of stopped happening LOL…but to be fair, I currently feel better than I have for a long long time, and my games recently have been so much better (I actually make all the runs I see now as opposed to trotting around for half of them LOL - I play twice a week).

I think there has always been, and will always be, a fat bastard kicking away at my inside, but it's my job to suppress the **** and keep on doing what I'm doing.

Yeah, 46, 47 in March…I 'think' it's a testament, although perhaps it's a sign of what a child I can be LOL…but yes mate, 46 with a 21 year old son who's becoming a coach (two major injuries blew his chance of playing) and an 8.5 year old daughter! So deffo 46!!!!!

Now, be a good lad and stay off those ****ing tabs!!!!! ;-)

After almost a year.. I will be giving up the E-cig some January and thats that, I'll be done :D

Congrats mate - you gonna have a celebratory cig? haha (is that poor taste?)

Ive been have the nicotine gum - hits the spot but just not that instant buzz and hit. I may get addicted to them.

I think as humans, we need to be adicted to something be it food, drink or whatever. Its transferrance of addiction from cigs to nicotine (although it is the nicotine that youre really addicted to)

cheers mate!

thats why I recommend E-cigs, you may not get the buzz, nothing really gives you that other than the real thing. but you really do get the hit. They have worked wonders for me. and as you can reduce the nicotine in them it becomes less painful to get off it. And now I hardly ever smoke it other than during spurs game or on *** breaks at work.

I actually fly to Cuba on Monday so it would be wrong of me not to celebrate on the beach, with a proper cigar and a mojito...

I will give them a go later if things dont subside. My cravings at day 5 is worse than at day 1 ALTHOUGH theyre getting more infrequent. They are intense cravings though like im about to snap. Persevering tho. I have decided not to go out or drink any alcohol for a couple of weeks. I really wanna give this a go and that means sacrificing.

It really is ****ed up how we can be SO addicted like this. I actually laugh to myself as to how addicted I was/am. It is easily the toughest thing I have ever done and most probably will do.

Ps - it would be insulting to the country if you didnt enjoy a cigar by the beach - I mean how insulting is that? ludicrous mate.

Went out last night had cigs - maybe I should have actually not gone out. The funny thing is im not craving it now and didnt crave it before I went out. My cravings have definitely susided ten fold. Its the going out and alcohol thats an issue - that association is stronger than any other in my mind. hmmmmmmm

Its a year ago today that I had my last cigarette. I had tried before using gum, lozenges, willpower etc but nothing worked. This time I used an ecig and cannot believe how easy it has been. My health was deteriorating quite quickly being asthmatic, colds were horrendous and then I contracted pneumonia and was close to being admitted to hospital. Giving up has saved my health and quite possibly my life.

How old are you out of interest?

I'm asthmatic, 20 years old and have been smoking for 5 years. I used to be great at long distance running and never believed that I had asthma because I'd never had any problems and I never needed my inhaler.

5 years later I can tell I'm asthmatic from how bad my lungs have became compared to friends who have smoked for the same length of time.

My lungs have got a little bit better in the past 6 weeks though as I've stated taking my inhaler.

I'm 39 and smoking didn't do my asthma any favours although I wouldn't admit that to myself. It wasn't until I hit about 35 that I was really getting problems, awful coughs, colds that would last for weeks and then getting pneumonia last year which was scary. I think I needed that scare as I knew deep down I was heading for deep trouble.
I'm not going to preach to anyone or take a holier than thou attitude as I know how difficult giving up can be and preaching at people just irritates them. But when you are ready to give up then I recommend ecigs. Thinking about it I cannot actually remember having a cold or cough in the past year. Only bad thing is weight gain. Its not that you eat more especially having an ecig stops that but that when you stop smoking, your heart doesn't need to work so hard and slows down and in turn your motabilism slows down.

I went out tonight and didnt have a cig woooooooohoooooo - this was a break through as I have made it a conscious decision not to go out for a while so I dont smoke. Last saturday I took the plunge, went out and smoke - ****. Tonight went out and didnt smoke wooooooho.

Anyways about your point, I have heard that but its not necessarily smoking that increases the heart rate but the nicotine. Ive been doing gums so I suppose my heart rate would be the same (a notch slower as less nicotine) which would negate that I suppose.

I have noticed that I have had a lot more sugar and by that I mean with tea after dinner, ive been drinking it to replace cigs and ive had to have it with a teaspoon of sugar which has helped.

My cravings have now kinda diluted and the habit has changed somewhat as I dont go looking for them as if im still smoking. Do I miss it? perhaps but now my cravings have gone from a NEED to smoke to a WANT to smoke and as we all know wanting something is easier to forget about than needing something. I want a million quid but dont need a million quid.
