Putin & Russia

And yet many so called red lines have been crossed and nothing. Of course things may get out of control but I suspect that there is a very remote chance of Russia going nuclear. Probably zero chance considering Putin's fear of his own mortality.

I'm more worried about that macaron in the White House and his morbid fascination with nuking things at the moment. And look, he has now decided to restart nuclear testing. Oh joy.
I mean, being more worried about the US than Russia is an interesting take for sure ...

Has there been any significant moves either way in this war recently? It's all gone a bit quiet in the press.

I like Philips O'Brien's weekly analysis on the war. In short his analysis notes the battlelines are more or less static, with the odd minor exception. The majority of the attention is focused on the ranged aspect of the conflict. From a Ukrainian perspective, this means applying their own 'sanctions' on the russian fossil fuel industry, which is having a notable effect. Trump has repeatedly promised sanctions on Russia but has always backed down when it matters. It is total performative flimflam, and everyone and their dog knows it.

Sounds promising

Rubio says 'tremendous progress' made at Ukraine peace talks and hopes for deal 'very soon'

It really doesn't. The deal that's been put to Ukraine is total capitulation.

Zelensky should counter with the offer that Russia can lease the Donbas region but Ukraine keeps the mining rights, has NATO membership and can reverse their nuclear disarmament.

This 'updated' plan is just what Ukraine want.
The original was just a list of what Russia wants.

I can't see this going anywhere.

Realistically the main sticking point is Ukraine want their land back. No chance Russia are saying yes.

To be fair, the correct response to a completely unrealistic and ridiculous Russian wishlist was to counter with something similar from a Ukranian perspective.

These talks are going to lead to nothing. Totally farcical way to conduct talks. Russia gives their list of demands, US say to Ukraine take it, Ukraine and Europe amend Russian list to their list of demands and US say to Russia take it. Neither side is going to accept. If they want proper talks they all need to be involved in discussions.

The end of this "diplomacy" will be that the war continues. The only real diplomacy that will get Russia into proper negotiations is to provide Ukraine with the weapons they need. Enough long range weapons to take out most of Russias oil production would be a good start.

I think Ukraine would settle without the land but with NATO membership.
