Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

And they were right. Corbyn should have held his nerve and declared full leaver. There's too much lingering Thatcherism-Blairism in Labour still though
Wouldn't have made a difference. Corbyn was unelectable for any number of reasons, his policies just one of them.

Remember Blair first began privatisation (through PFIs) of Royal Mail, London underground, the NHS and schools.

He was the first for privatisation? Thatcher didn't privatise?
He wanted the public and private sectors to work together.
Imagine that, businesses and government working together. fudging radical idea.

First to begin privatising those 4 sectors. That was about all that remained after Thatcher's demolition job.

Imagine schools and healthcare being driven by altruism, rather than profit.

That's an interesting way of wondering what would happen if there were no imperative for them to be any goodat what they do.

French taxi driver faces charges that he stole luggage and cash from the Foreign Secretary during a trip from Italy to the French Alps.
David Lammy got into a dispute over a €700 (£590) “additional” fee charged to him and Nicola Green, his wife, as they were driven from Forli, near Bologna, to Flaine, a ski village in Haute Savoie, in April following a state visit by the King to Italy.
The Lammys have claimed that Nasim Mumin, a taxi driver who provides a car service for VIPs, demanded more money when they arrived at their destination, even though it was agreed that the fare had been paid in full when they set off.
While making his demand, it is claimed that Mr Mumin, who was sitting beside Ms Green, opened a compartment between the seats and showed her a knife.

After refusing to pay the driver extra when they arrived at the French resort late at night, the Lammys got out of the car. They have claimed that Mr Mumin drove off with their luggage still in the boot.
However, in an interview with The Telegraph, Mr Mumin, 40, from Avignon, south-west France, called the Foreign Secretary a “liar” and a “thief”.
He claimed that the minister’s entourage had agreed to an additional sum to be paid at the destination because he was carrying a higher-risk client.
Mr Mumin said he was owed €700, the difference between the €1,550 cost of the trip and €850 due to be settled by the GetTransfer service platform, which Mr Lammy had used to book the trip. He said the company had engaged his services after being contacted by the British embassy in Paris.

He added: “I have not been paid a penny for travelling 2,500km to ferry a British minister and his wife from Italy to a ski resort in France. It’s a disgrace.”
Denying threatening the couple, he said: “I’ve been working for 25 years as a chauffeur and have four special licences to drive in official convoys and carry dignitaries in foreign special transfers and never had a problem until now.”
He had collected the couple from the airport at Forli on April 10, driving them more than 360 miles (582km) overnight to the resort of Flaine.

Still cheaper than a ryan air flight to bilbao.

I recommend everyone listen to The News Agents interview with him this week.

Emily Maitlis easily got him to show how fudging nasty he is.

He’s more racist than Farage.

An absolute scumbag.

Yeh even Farage showed recently he has a limit in fairness to him, sadly when he showed that limit loads of Reform voters panned him for it which shows what their MO is.

There are some tremendously knowledgeable people on here about energy, way beyond me, but surely the facts of the matter are that eventually there will need to be a switch and those that reach that place first, whilst being the leader in development will stand in a good place? Surely thats just a part of good planning? The first through the wall often get the bloodiest nose and all that.
Alternatively, let others spend money on getting it right before adopting it.
Unless you are the early movers in R&D, wait and piggy back off the others.

Germany were massive leaders in solar. Till china totally blew them out of the water. Now i'm not sure if they even have a solar industry left.

That's the problem.

Patents and protections, intellectual knowledge are only going to be gained at the R and D stage.

If you're looking to setup an industry and manufacturing base piggy backing on someone else's hard yards...you'll be a long way behind China Korea Taiwan etc

Germany got the patents and protections. China just came out with a product just as good that was a lot cheaper.
Looks like the same might happen with cars. With byd gaining a massive share of the market.

Don't really understand the "Brexit betrayal" narrative of new deal with EU. Alignment on standards is something that is a prerequisite on any trade deal. Whether the deal is a good one or not, or whether you think we should be focusing on deals involving the EU over other trading partners is neither here nor there. Brexit means our government are responsible for trade policy and if we choose alignment with another country/bloc's standards or to allow another country access to say, our waters, in exchange for easing trade , thats in our gift to agree and to pull out of the treaty if it no longer suits our needs. This is Brexit in operation.

Yeh, also wasn't that the idea, leave but get a deal, surely this is just that deal.

The fishing industry hated the old deal so all the "betraying the fisherman" is cobblers as they surveyed them recently and most said they felt conned by the original Brexit deal and would have voted remain if asked again

Agree. Aligning on food standards is one thing im quite happy to do. Much better that than let all the chemical pumped stuff from America and Australia in.

For me the one devil in the detail is the door being open to EU students being able to pay UK level university tuition fees. That would instantly bankrupt the entire higher education sector, as UK fees are loss leaders, only partially propped up by profit-making international rates.

What on earth is this deal.

We should be telling the Europeans they are on their own dealing with Russia, which danger they have bought upon themselves, that their problems are their own, and to leave our fish alone.

Bunch of perverts.

EU only makes up just over 10% of University students currently. Top 3 are China, India and Nigeria. It may be the final straw but hardly the root cause of Universities going bankrupt.
