Quite simply, wow!
While by-election results are of course often about giving a government a bit of a kick up the arse, this is something else. A 34% swing in a seat which has been Tory for almost 200 years really is a stunning result, and the clearest indication yet that Trump UK’s goose is well and truly cooked.
Perhaps all hope isn’t lost just yet.

How telling is it that even in the current climate Labour still managed to somehow lose over half its share of the vote?Quite simply, wow!

I think that was more tactical voting than a sign of diminished support. I wouldn't read too much into that drop. How telling is it that even in the current climate Labour still managed to somehow lose over half its share of the vote?
Very. How telling is it that even in the current climate Labour still managed to somehow lose over half its share of the vote?

Very.
They made a big point during the campaign that they had the second biggest vote share in the last election and they should be challenging the Tories not the Lib Dems.
Maybe the voters wanted to "protest vote" but still couldn't bring themselves to vote Labour.
That's a big climb down. Good news.Seems that “taking back control” is right up there with the “irreversible roadmap out of lockdown”.

Given that they didn’t really run a proper campaign, and their implicit message was to vote in a tactical way to oust the Conservatives, not very.
First no confidence in Boris letter gone in now I see from Roger Gale.

You do seem to have a proper bee in your bonnet over “woke!” I would hazard a guess that woke is far down the list of reasons that Labour are not winning more popular support. Way behind not creating an alternative vision of how they are going to attract investment for job creation, not offering an alternative to the grossly unfair health and social care reforms that penalise the less wealthy with the payment cap, and it is not clear what Labour are offering in terms of tackling climate change. Now they may have put out briefings on all these matters but their policies are not engaging with the so called middle or working classes. Sort out their message on these matters and they would appeal to more people.Im a Labour voter but I don’t think they’re electable at the moment. I liked Keir Starmer at first, seemed to say all the right things, seems intelligent but people for some reason haven’t warmed to him. They’d rather vote for a loveable rogue like Boris even though he’s also an incorrigible womaniser and a blundering idiot. Likability trumps effectiveness it would appear. Labour have got too bogged down in indulging the 10% of people in this country who are so neurotic they complain and get offended about everything. Wokeism doesn’t play well to 85-90% of the population. I’d quite happily vote Lib Dem at the next general election if it increases the chances of finally getting rid of Boris and the tories.
