Juventus are making a £20 million bid to sign the Brazilian midfielder Paulinho from
Tottenham Hotspur. The move is expected to pave the way for Arturo Vidal to leave the Italian champions although
Manchester United, who have strongly been linked with the 27-year-old, deny they are close to agreeing a deal for the Chilean international.
According to sources in Italy, however, Paulinho is already being lined up as Vidal's replacement with Juventus confident that an offer for the Brazilian international will be accepted by Spurs.
The likelihood is, however, that Spurs's chairman Daniel Levy will want to receive more than £25 million before he will even consider selling Paulinho.
The midfielder has previously insisted he is happy at Spurs but a move to Juventus, who are competing to win their fourth successive Italian league title next season and hope to challenge for the
Champions League, could be an attractive option.
Paulinho arrived at White Hart Lane last summer in what proved to be a difficult campaign for Spurs and the midfielder who lost his place under head coach Tim Sherwood after Andre Villas-Boas, who signed him in what was regarded as a transfer coup, was sacked last December.
Sherwood questioned whether Paulinho, who turns 26 later this month, was living off his reputation although the player was hampered by injury.
Sherwood was himself sacked at the end of the season to make way for Mauricio Pochettino who now has a battle on his hands if he wants to keep Paulinho, who can play as a box-to-box goalscoring midfielder, scoring seven goals last season, or in a deeper role, at the club.
Juve coach Antonio Conte is an admirer of Paulinho who started Saturday's third and fourth place play-off between Brazil and Holland at the World Cup. He was a key member of Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad.
Spurs paid around £17 million to sign Paulinho from the Sao Paulo club Corinthians and he attracted interest from Real Madrid during last season and, more recently, Chelsea who are still looking to strengthen their midfield. An informal inquiry was made about Paulinho.
Chelsea are also interested in Vidal's Juventus team-mate Paul Pogba but, like United, may well be unwilling to pay the £60 million fee being demanded for the French international. Chelsea have also considered a move for Atletico Madrid's Spanish international Koke following the departure of Frank Lampard.
United have been strongly linked with a move for Vidal to form a new central midfield partnership with Ander Herrera who they signed for £29 million from Athletic Bilbao.
Juventus will want in excess of £30 million for Vidal although United continue to deny they are on the verge of completing a deal. Nevertheless he is expected to be allowed to leave Juve this summer if the club can sign Paulinho.
