I think he said he wanted them to win the semi final with his billy England hat on, thought he was a shoo in to get the England job so he probably thought it would look bad if the future England manager said publicly that he wanted an English team to lose in Europe. And Hodgson was appointed after the semi final and before the final. Redknapp then obviously wanted Chelsea to lose as it would land him in hot water if we failed to qualify for the CL .

That certainly didn't help his cause. His contradictory statements about his contract must have irked Levy, but I don't believe Levy would have sacked him if we had qualified for the CL as he would have faced a huge backlash from the fans.
