I know you were at the match, but the few times he did beat his man there was usually a cover defender in him and no one to really pass the ball to. A few times he did attempt to pass quickly but the cover defender always got a touch to the ball slowing the pass down or deflecting it. It was a good setup on Bournemouth's part as they knew he was the danger man the swamped him and gave him no real space or passing lanes to move the ball on.Kudus was really poor today IMO, he needs to learn to pass the ball once he has beaten a player and the space has opened up instead of holding on to the ball and trying to. Eat another player and then another one again if he beats the second one. MUCH worse than that though he didn’t bother to track Bournemouth’s left back (who I thought was superb) every time he went forward. Bournemouth were constantly creating overloads on our right hand side and Kudus wasn’t doing anything to help us defend that. I was really surprised that he stayed in the pitch. I would’ve booked him at halftime or, if not then, the first time he failed to do it in the second half once he’d had a rollicking at halftime time.
Iraola is a top manager IMHO and was my first choice to replace Ange. His teams press so well, and Semenyo is an absolute beast. I knew this one would be tough. He should be backed a million per cent. Today was beyond disappointing but he got dingdonged by Iraola. It happens.
No manager has the answers to such a degree that they’ll always make the right selections at the start of games and changes during games. Frank is no different.
There’s been enough so far, for me, to suggest we’ll have a good season under him with a few blips like this. He has to learn from it and I’m sure he will.
You even see it individual games - Bournemouth were great against Liverpool, then they tired and by the end, lost to a late surge. Same thing nearly happened against us, but we didn't have the quality to convert.
I don't think the pressing style is his weakness. His teams are so well drilled, that they can overcome loss of key players and still be effective. You can see Iraola's strengths and weaknesses in that approach - it's a madman rush of energy that tries to get the game wrapped up before the legs go. It works at the start of seasons when they have a lot of energy, it works at the end when everyone is exhausted. In between is when they basically crash because they start getting tired while others who aren't quite as gung-ho have reserves of energy to draw on.
The ref fell for their constant play acting, he was so gullable, absolute bell-end
Observations from the stadium: Richarlison isn't a viable hold-up target. And I was disappointed in Romero as on-field captain. I didn't see him do anything to marshal the troops, to inject any energy or motivation or sense of urgency or game management, and I saw him get on the ref only once. He played decently, but seemed dejected and one-note. He had a bad fall after a contested header and didn't seem quite right after that, so maybe that was the reason, but as captain he can't play so within himself when 1-0 down and the team and crowd utterly lacking in energy.
Yeah. They were the much better team today obviously, but fudge me did they manage to disrupt the game by playing dead on the ground. Was like watching the NFL with how often and how long the game stopped.
Having said that, Bournemouth were fudging good today. If they can keep this up, which I guess they can't, they'll qualify for the CL.
Johnson and Richarlison were especially terrible. I do think their inability to either control or hold the ball really hampered us. It just made it super easy for Bournemouth to triple up on Kudus. Simons makes a difference but I don't think despite how good he is that he changes everything when the problem players would likely still be on the pitch even with Simons present.Think it was a bit of a perfect storm game. No Maddison, no Kulusevski and Simons not ready yet. One of the best pressing teams in the league and they smartly pressed by shutting down our right hand side (where we had our only real ball progressors).
I think even a single player (like Simons) would make a massive difference in a game like that.
Frank didn't seem to have any answers, perhaps because it's still so early. But I was surprised not to see changes at half time. Or real tactical tweaks in our buildup in the first half or at half time that I could spot at least.
Don't think the players were particularly bad as individuals. Most of them did about as well as can be expected in the circumstances.
I actually thought he got the starting XI wrong as well as not making subs early enough. Captain hindsight and all that but I think he should have gone with the more aggressive/progressive line-up we played against Burnley rather than the "contain and counter" type line up we played against City. I'd have started with Bergvall for example.Think it was a bit of a perfect storm game. No Maddison, no Kulusevski and Simons not ready yet. Right far too early, he is still learning the players capabilities etc, I expect the likes of Bergvall will slowly start more as time goes on.Really bad game today but excellent in the last 3. Too early to make sweeping judgements on a new regime.
Times like this call for abit of bottle and calm
Doesn't seem like it.
People who refused to judge the last manager for any number of reasons are ready to now Frank has lost his first game
Bit brick if you've spent the previous year telling people to support managers and give them time while explaining the parameters needed for a manager to be judged for performances.
