Because they are packing the middle of the pitch and sitting deep. Any team is going to try to stretch play. Simons was taking the ball in the middle of the park, but couldn't turn and just popped the ball back the CBs. And to be fair Odobert's shot onto the upright came from the middle of the pitch.
