Tottenham Hotspur agrees multi-year partnership with Socios.com offering additional benefits to fans worldwide
  • Members and Season Ticket Holders (18 years+) will be offered free non-transferable Spurs Fan Tokens from Wednesday 4 October
  • Fan Tokens will provide instant access to Club-related polls, predictors, quizzes and competitions on Socios.com, through which points can be gained to unlock rewards and experiences
  • Through the partnership, Socios.com will also fund the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Reignite programme, delivering adult employment opportunities and healthy lifestyle support within the Club’s local community
Tottenham Hotspur is launching a Spurs Fan Token in partnership with Socios.com to provide fans worldwide with access to a unique range of Club-related activities, rewards and experiences.

The Spurs Fan Token becomes an additional benefit within the Club’s membership scheme, with all One Hotspur+ Members and Season Ticket Holders - aged 18 and over - offered five free Fan Tokens, and One Hotspur/One Hotspur Connect Members offered one free Fan Token once it becomes available on Wednesday 4 October.

Fans will be sent a voucher code via email, which can then be redeemed within the Socios.com app. The non-transferable free token will provide instant access to Club-related polls, predictors, quizzes and competitions, through which points can be gained to unlock rewards and experiences.

The Club will work closely with Socios.com to provide tailored rewards for Spurs fans, such as Big Screen messages, VIP tickets, Spurs Shop vouchers and virtual meet-and-greets.

Socios.com is a rewards and engagement platform that has partnerships with some of the biggest sports teams in the world across football, tennis, rugby union and motor racing. Since it launched in football over four years ago, more and more new benefits have been regularly added for Fan Token holders - more than two million fans from 167 countries are using the Socios.com app to connect with, and be rewarded by, their favourite clubs.

Following the initial launch, Spurs Fan Tokens will become available to non-Members for an initial price of $2 each (approximately £1.65) - also available from Wednesday 4 October.

Through the partnership, Socios.com will also fund the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Reignite programme, delivering adult employment opportunities and healthy lifestyle support within the Club’s local community.

Ryan Norys, Commercial Sales Director, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “We’re pleased to be able to provide fans worldwide with a new range of Club-related rewards and experiences. Our Fan Token will build on the many benefits of our existing membership scheme. We’ll be offering all our Members and Season Ticket Holders free Fan Tokens at launch and are working with Socios.com to deliver a range of rewards that carry appeal to both domestic and international fans.

“The partnership is another example of how the Club is working to create additional recurring sources of revenue to reinvest in our football activities.”

Emma Diskin, Chief Operating Officer, Socios.com, said: “Fans across the world are being rewarded on Socios.com with one-of-a-kind experiences simply by showing support for their club through Fan Tokens. With this launch, Spurs fans will be able to engage in Club-related polls, predictors, and competitions, through which points can be gained to unlock new rewards and experiences.

“We’ve now welcomed seven English sides to our group of more than 100 major sporting organisations, and we’re determined to keep improving our app.”

Further updates on the rewards and experiences accessible to Spurs Fan Token holders will be communicated in due course.

And the response to the above from the Trust. I agree, I think, with the concerns they raised (ignoring the usual 'why didn't they tell us first' stuff)

Club partnership with Socios
We understand the Club needs to develop its commercial partnerships but this relationship will see engagement passed on to a third party provider enabling it to monetise fandom.

THST is yet again disappointed not to have been consulted on this move or to have been forewarned about this afternoon's announcement.

The Club says One Hotspur Members and Season Ticket Holders will be provided with one and five free tokens respectively and the arrangement then encourages fans to enter a cryptocurrency ecosystem of which many fans will have little knowledge but will be encouraged to purchase further tokens to ‘win’ things.

The Club is trusted by fans and we fear many will end up in a system they do not understand that is designed to monetise their support and love for the club.

It is important there should be no financial or technological barriers to fan engagement yet this relationship potentially creates both.

THST expects the Club to safeguard our supporters against financial loss but this partnership seemingly does the opposite by exposing fans to potential losses.

We shall also be asking the Club to confirm that supporters' data will not be shared with any provider without further consultation or consent.

Very disappointed.

Levy stated that he wants to align ourselves with the right type of brands/companies. Giving the example of having no interest in a betting firm sponsoring the stadium.
The club also frequently talk of the cost of living crisis and them understanding how tough it is for everyone to make ends meet. So the last thing people need is exposure to this type of operation. Dressed up as engagement and fun....it has an investing (read gambling) side that most people don't understand or frankly need exposure too.

Yes I get this is a commercial opportunity for the club, another income stream BUT it goes against the noises they have themselves been making around ethics and morals.

It should have been run past the FAB at one of the last two meetings...to guage feeling and feedback.

I missed the bottom part of the announcement. There's also a video in there which I haven't watched.

Use of free Fan Tokens does not involve using Chiliz. Chiliz - a cryptoasset on the Chiliz blockchain - would only be required for the purchase of additional Fan Tokens. There is no financial commitment on the Chiliz blockchain with gifted tokens. If you sell your Fan Token on the platform, you will be paid in Chiliz, although free tokens cannot be sold or transferred.

As Socios.com is a global app with users all around the world, Chiliz provides one single value and measurement across multiple currencies. Although the market will not have an impact on the initial $2 cost of a Spurs Fan Token, the cost of future open-market purchases may vary.

From Sunday 8 October, the marketing of cryptoasset promotions in the UK will be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and subject to new rules to better protect consumers, including Fan Token holders.

The promotion of all cryptoassets in the UK, including Fan Tokens, will require the following wording: Don't invest unless you're prepared to lose all the money you invest. This is a high-risk investment, and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong. Take two minutes to learn more - https://www.socios.com/uk/risk-summary/

Socios.com, along with industry leaders, were part of industry engagement on new rules. Together with partner clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Socios.com has taken the necessary steps to comply with the new requirements.

It's some sort of crypto Ponzi scheme. The club should not be associated with this crap. 'Some' fans are going to get involved and lose their money.
There's no evidence that it's a Ponzi scheme, just because some cryptos are doesn't mean they all are.
From the little that I can see the crypto side is only a part of it, you buy tokens and use them to take part in votes, games etc. Wouldn't be for me but could see the appeal for others.

Is it any worse than the state authorised lottery?

They're both just a stupid tax.

I know you hate the trust and slag them off at any chance you get but do you REALLY think that is their issue here?
It’s really not that, I agree
The trust though did get a bloody quick response out
But the whole SOCIOS is not something I’d want the club involved with and hopefully the trust can inform fans who wouldn’t know better

How do those against SOCIOS sponsorship of THFC feel about betting booths at football stadia? They are okay but tokens aren’t?

I think it’s probably a bit of gimmick. There doesn’t seem to be enough integration yet to make it useful and meaningful. For example if you could gift someone a pint and pay for it on your phone using tokens etc maybe these kinds of things will develop. But I can see this fad being around for a few years before it’s replaced or updated. But in the meantime if they are willing to pay for a Bentancur or other player with their sponsorship, I think the benefits outweigh the potential negatives. Fans are not zombie conformists who can’t think for themselves. There are so many betting apps, betting shops etc this is probably less dangerous and damaging.
