**Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

The incompetence of the FA is breathtaking!

Not really. They are sticking to a rule that was agreed with by a large number of organisations. It is shortsightedness that leads to this.

'Following consultation with the game's stakeholders (the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers’ Association, the League Managers’ Association, Professional Game Match Officials Limited and the National Game) in the summer, it was agreed that retrospective action should only be taken in respect of incidents which have not been seen by the match officials.'

This was seen by one of the linesmen, so they cannot do anything about it.

surely the rules are in need of a change

the tackle was an absolute shocker. it's lucky it wasn't career ending. just because someone saw it, who cares? it was absolutely terrible, and deserves the regular 3 match ban, at least.

"In the case of McManaman, it has been confirmed that at least one of the match officials saw the coming together, though not the full extent of the challenge. In these circumstances retrospective action cannot be taken,"

i mean, come on. the fudge is that? we kinda saw it, therefore we can't do anything about it? farcical.

It is farcical, i can grant you that, however it seems a nice neat way to actually avoid responsibility. Just point at the rules and state that their hands are tied.

Am rather curious how this would differ from the rescinding of a red card, surely in these cases the referee/linesman will have seen the situation and yet the FA then deem themselves able to interfere with proceedings? Is this not still deemed retrospective action?

Pretty sure the FA have rescinded cards this season.

Yes, Tom Huddlestone's red card against Norwich City, just for one example.

They claim they can step in and take action in "special circumstances" such as the Ben Thatcher incident with Mendes.

I certainly think the tackle from McManaman warrants them to take action.

Not only do they not charge him, but they charge John Carver :ross:

Well seeing as the agreement to do with the retrospective punishment took place in the summer, I can't see the relevance of the Ben Thatcher incident.

The hell would he do that for?

I've been hearing it was his linesman that claimed he saw it, so has fudge all to do with Halsey.

Saying he is unfit and the reason he missed it is because his positioning was poor because he is too unfit to get around the pitch.

The reason he missed it was that there was a player was standing in the way.

Referees go through lots of training and testing, if he's not fit then they would have known it before now.

Halsey himself is thinking of quitting, but that's more to do with the death threats..

The retroactive rule in this case is gonad*s.

Let's say Player A lays out player B off the ball. The ref doesn't see it. The linesman does but isn't quite sure what he saw and takes no action. The camera replay clearly shows Player A laying out Player B, but the FA can take no action, so player A carries on as normal, unpunished. That's how stupid that rule is.

But I bet if that did happen, the FA would suddenly discover some discretionary powers to take action. Especially if Player B played for Man U.

He is in a poor position though, the player in his way is the player the played the pass to Haidara, Halsey was in an appalling position.

'Mark Halsey was unfortunate in having his view blocked just at the moment of the tackle. He admits it was a red card and has apologised to Alan Pardew.

No such excuse for the assistant referee who, TV images showed, was looking straight at the incident and didn't have the bottle to flag for the foul.'

You could sit around and blame the guy who didn't see it, or you could blame the guy who did and then did nothing about it.

Your call really.

There used to be stories that refs would tell their assistants that all they wanted from them was to be old-style linesmen (offsides and throw-ins) and that they (the ref) would deal with everything else. I do wonder sometimes whether this has changed.

However, on the other side, refs will always make some mistakes, be it fitness, position, judgement. As do all footballers and every other human. This was a just a mistake. Nothing malicious or corrupt. 99.9% of the time if Halsey is slightly out of position for an incident like this then there is no horror challenge and no hullabaloo in the papers. The error or the failing by Halsey is the same whether Macmanaman breaks his leg or misses him totally.

Also, waiting for Pardew to come out, retrospectively, and criticise all those bad tackles by Tiote and Cabaye etc. In fact not just Pardew, wish all managers would have the same standards for their own players tackling/behaviour as they do with the self-righteous indignantion when it happens to one of their own.

Can't remember which one but a former ref said Halsey should quit as he's not upto it anymore. Apparently this was also the ref who had given a player 3 yellows in one game...
