Lucas Bergvall

I'm fine with this, we came within one game of relegation, we need a revolution not tinkering round the edges and if that means replacing youth with ready made players that's just the way it probably needs to be and we can't blame Lucas for seeing his development better served somewhere else.
Preferably abroad though.

Yeah, agreed. I think he’ll probably become a good player in a few years, but I don’t think he’ll get much game time, so if we can cash in, then maybe it’s the right move, especially if he doesn’t want to stay to fight for his place.

If Lucas goes think it makes zero difference to max senior 17 non home grown players for the PL squad as he is under 21.
At the moment I make we have 18 senior non home grown not counting any loan players , if we are to bring anyone else in someone needs shifting.

2 of the 3 crown jewels. Just need to release Gray from his burden too...
Bergval has done no more than Lewis Holtby and Vuskovic played for a mediocre side in Germany. Bergval will not be going to a bigger club unless he is guaranteed football. He doesn’t even start for Sweden.

Maybe comparing someone who came in to the side at 17 and is only 20 to Lewis Holtby who joined at 22 might be an issue of judgement rather than reality.

All of this is going to be part of the backlash when RDZ eventually has a bust up with ENIC and flounces.
Not fazed if he's left the club and squad in a better state than he's inherited it. Personally I e never really bought the hype of Bergvall so especially not bothered. A decent prospect but I don't know I'm not as convinced as the majority here seemed to be, same with Tel and Gray tbh.

The hype is because of his age
The issue is he needs to improve on what he has shown to meet the hype
He may, he may not

I struggle to describe Bergvall, watching him before he joined us he had all the hallmarks of a Gerrard, could dribble, pass and score. In the time he has been here however he has struggled to show that level in the prem. He is not a 10, he is not a 6 so that leaves him as a water carrier that can do a bit of everything but exceptional at nothing. I think for 60-70m I would be tempted, if 30-40m I would keep him and see how he goes under RDZ

I look at this so differently. Lucas has this on his CV

- I won the EL but missed out due to injury.
- I've played under 4 different managers in 2 seasons
- I nearly got relegated, but didn't

I mean, who has had more football life experiences than this? How can it not build your character into something really strong?

Should we not be careful that we don't let some of these strong characters leave? Numerically, we've lost Palhinha and Bissouma and it looks like we have some strong links to their replacements. If we lose Bergvall and Sarr, who will replace them numerically in our squad. OK, we don\t have UEFA football but we do need a really strong engine room.

And it goes a way to explaining why at 20 his career hasnt exactly has the more consistent grounding for development

Bergvalls done fine. The issue has been the squad building around him. Good luck to him.

We should be getting £100M for him and Vuskovic combined. For an outlay of £25M total. Not bad but it feels like it’s happend inadvertently rather than by design.

I've watched enough football and for long enough to know that age doesn't mean a great deal. Everyone seems to be talking as if progression in some linear line so if he's "here" at 18bthen he will be "here" at 25 and we both know it absolutely doesn't work like that. Some players progress steadily, some stay at the same level and some regress.

How any player will turn out is debatable , for me I've actually seen some of elite players at 17 - 21 and they tend to already posses many if not all of the attributes that end up making them who they are already. Bergvall for me seems a good prospect but the way the hype is you would think he's absolutely guaranteed to be WC and that I just don't see.

But not a strong enough character to want to stick around and fight for his place but wants out as soon as we appear to be finally acting like a big club?
I don't blame him, he's at an important stage in his development and obviously needs minutes but for me a player with the elite self belief would stay and fight.
In terms of cover we would still have Bentancur, Gallagher, Gray, Kulu and we may still sign Paulinha plus new signings.
