Jan Paul van Hecke

Let me first say that I really like Van Hecke.

But I've been surprised by how aggressive Van Hecke is. From his first minutes in pre-season he really motors into challenges and takes out the ball and the player and the linesman. So far so good, but I thought some of his challenges were at least yellow in a Prem game.

I was also amazed how slow he was when running (can't call it sprinting) back into position, he has relied massively on Tonali to scurry back and fill the gap. Maybe he was taking it easy because it was early in pre-season, but he did look slow compared to the forwards flying alongside him.

I like him, he has loads of positive attributes, I was just surprised how slow he was. We will see in a few days I guess. It is probably all factored in i.e. he has licence to go and clatter players and win the ball and if it doesn't work, the other players know to fill in for him whilst he comes back.

That sounds like something one of my Sunday league teammates would’ve written about me 15 years ago.

Swapping Vuskovic and ditching Romero for this guy looks a bit weird now. Maybe it will all make sense with VdV there to do the running around. Maybe.

Romero was beyond us sadly, a combination of the league, the player and our fanbase took care of any chance we had of him being a part of things (sadly IMO). Vuskovic? Yup, we don't know, it's a gamble and one I can see the sense in taking. But I will admit that I am now simply hoping RDZ and VH have a strong enough relationship to get the guy playing at a level we need him, because I have to say, I was surprised at how poor he was today.

He was poor at what he's always been poor at -physical duels and aerial battles. His stats from last season bear this out - don't believe he was close to the top percentile in either.

We signed him to be the line-breaking passer in the CB pairing, with someone else being the battler. Problem is, Senesi has an identikit profile. Pairing them is pairing two physically sub-par passers as your CBs - you will be dominated by a physical side like Brentford, and so we were.

Should have started Danso, imo. Failing that, should have played a back three with Danso in it. This sort of game is not one Van Hecke will ever excel in.

Senesi was worse for me.

Quite possibly. But he was signed as the second choice LCB on a free, in a year with no Europe, with a strong assumption that VdV would play almost every game. Van Hecke has come in as the starting RCP, replacing a flawed but very effective player, and on first showing he doesn’t look the part.

Senesi was signed to compete for a starting position and is capable of playing as a RCB.

This is going to be bad news for Savinho whom we're signing as a winger, but I'd be inclined to go with a back three for now that includes Danso.

I actually think a back three of Van Hecke (passer) - Danso (aerial bully) - VdV (recovery pace) is very well balanced. But I think any combination of just two that we select from Van Hecke, VdV, Danso and Senesi will have issues.

Van Hecke - VdV (the likely first-choice pairing) - doubt their strength in the air.

Van Hecke - Danso - recovery pace an issue.

Van Hecke - Senesi - both strength and pace an issue.

Danso - Van de Ven - passing out from the back a problem.

Danso - Senesi - recovery pace an issue.

And so on...
