Interim manager thread 2.0

He wouldn't take the job IMO.
He would be an idiot to. I hope he doesn't get it. I hope Poch doesn't come back. Too many fans would rather someone who just wants the pay check and has won trophies cos apparently that's been a fantastic and successful approach for us recently.

Mason had WBA punching well above their weight. They've ranked since he left.

In terms of player respect, I'd say Frank and Tudor are pretty tough. We really can't be trying the touch love big personality guy again. We need a motivator.

I'd say De Zerbi now but I find him odious

We need to act with extreme boldness now.

Langhe and Vinai (and TF) all seem to be too timid for the task. Take Langhe’s comments about the Jan window…”there weren’t many players available” and “we tried for Semenyo but he chose City instead of us”. This role requires getting the job done, not “trying our best but unfortunately we came up short”.

If Poch is the guy, then get it done now regardless of what it takes. That’s how winners operate.

That's a bit of a stretch. They were 18th when he was sacked and on a terrible run of form, not sure I'd call it punching well above their weight....

No doubt Redknapp returning would be a massive gamble given his age and time out of the game. In some ways symptomatic that he's even being discussed. But at the same time can understand it, desperate times.

While I definitely am quite a long way off trusting the current people in charge of this football club making the right call it's also a decision I don't envy them having to make right now. A lot of uncertainty, nothing like a clear right answer, big stakes.
One positive i see in bringing old Harry back is we wont see any more of this passing out from the keeper brick.
We must be the most inept team on the planet at it. We are at the stage where the keeper must hoof it long every time. Out of hand or off the ground. Hope for flick ons from Richy and Solanke and get Tel playing the runner.
At least the defense wont stuff up as much.
I cant think of many occasions apart from City away where we ve actually looked like a half decent passing side. Our players cant pass wind properly.

I see that West Brom are also winless in 2026, so at least Mason would feel doubly at home should he return!

Albion may not have won a game for more than two months, but at least they are losing a lot less... scored just four goals in that time, and it's been 10 league games since the Baggies bagged more than one goal in a match.

Ten defeats in 16 matches was the run of results that spelled the end of Ryan Mason with the then Baggies boss openly admitting in the press: "We are losing too many games."

The bizarre thing (and a bricker for us) is there is literally no standout candidate to come in and put this fire out.

If you were to rate candidates out of 10....none of them are more than a 3...4 at a push.

Bleak

Maybe that's just the synergy we need to break out of this negative spiral, a 3/10 manager who didn't even make our original shortlist coaching a bunch of players who've been putting in 3/10 performances for months and most of whom were far from being our first choice too ⚖️

Klinsmann is the man for the job. He’s known for being an inspirational figure that’s tactically dog brick. But it’s the inspiration we need right now. Bring in Mason as his #2. Even Hughton or Caldwrweood who has expirience managing and coaching in the Prem and will know him from his time as a player.

“Knows the club” is meaningful for Mason. He doesn’t just know the players (although that’s obviously crucial), he also knows the systems and procedures that are used to get things done. If he wants to buy a piece of training kit urgently, he understands the levers that are used to get a purchase order signed immediately. This has value. Jurgen’s long-ago stints at Tottenham do not mean that he “knows the club” in this sense. I’m not really sure there’s any sense in which it’s meaningful.

What I say of Mason is true of Ange, and Wells, and Frank, of course. Just not of Klinsmann or of Redknapp.

This is why I think we should be getting Mason in as a number 2 to one of these older heads who will demand the respect of the players more than Mason himself and are potential motivators of players and fans but have been out of the game for too long (Redknapp, Hoddle, Klinsmann, whoever…). Mason would be a very good link between old and new.

To be clear I’m not talking long term, it’s just to lift the place to get two or three results before the end of the season.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I was on the board I wouldn’t know where to put my face with embarrassment the amount of ex players and managers putting themselves up for the fight. How on earth did this amazing club get to to this? Toothless, no direction, no leaders. Sad times
