Football Trivia Question of the Day

Spain was represented by the Madrid Football Club (later to be called Real Madrid), as the Spanish Football Association wasn't founded until 1913.

Yes, I knew that and that Germany sent a cable with their intent. Are you sure Portugal were a founder member?

Yes, Portugal were definitely founder members.

South Africa became the first non-European FIFA member in 1909, and Argentina and Chile followed in 1912.

The United States of America and Canada joined FIFA in 1913.

Yes, Portugal were definitely founder members.

Not according to FIFA they weren't:

•France - Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA)
•Belgium - Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports (UBSSA)
•Denmark - Dansk Boldspil Union (DBU)
•Netherlands - Nederlandsche Voetbal Bond (NVB)
•Spain - Madrid Football Club
•Sweden - Svenska Bollspells Förbundet (SBF)
•Switzerland - Association Suisse de Football (ASF)

From Wiki, so it may not be the best source...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA

I'm surprised wikipedia is wrong on that as its usually reliable on football history stuff. Anyway, I think it is wrong based on the following:

1. The History of FIFA on the FIFA.com has seven without Portugal: http://www.fifa.com/classicfootball/history/fifa/historyfifa1.html

2. The wikipedia history of FIFA article only lists the seven and links to the following document: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...r_FIFA_(1_septembre_1905)_original_screen.jpg

3. According to Wikipedia, the Portuguese federation was founded in 1916 and joined FIFA in 1923: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Football_Federation

4. Other histories also mention seven, e.g. http://www.all-soccer-info.com/

I only knew this as had read the last article at the week-end. I thought it interesting that quite a few of the initial federations were outside Europe, e.g. New Zealand (1891), Argentina (1893), Chile (1895) and Uruguay (1900). On a related note, do you know why those initial USA-Canada games are not recognised internationals (re: your question on first foreign international)?
