So, Foxtel (equivalent of Sky) got outbid (in a blind bidding process) for screening rights of the EPL for the next 3 seasons in Australia.
The bid was won by Optus, primarily a mobile phone and broadband provider. There was an assumption by many that Optus would offer some kind of standalone package whereby you'd watch TV through the Foxtel system (similar to what Setanta used to do).
But no....
The Optus pricing was announced this week and in order to view EPL you will need to be an Optus customer (use their phone network or use them as an ISP) and have a price package of over $85 a month. Plus, it will only be streamed with no guarantee of HD as that is dependent on your internet speed (particularly stupid considering how rural a lot of Australia is with absolutely tinkle-poor internet speed).
They have also hidden away the fact that if you're in an area where Optus are piggybacking their data on another provider's infrastructure, you will be charged more.
The whole thing is an absolute clusterfudge.
They honestly believe that people are going to pay out the contract with their existing ISP/phone provider (can cost into the thousands) just to move over to Optus, who a lot of people claim are inferior both in their quality of product and service.
The galling thing is that the service Foxtel provided was fantastic. Every single EPL game was available to watch, could be recorded and with great post game views etc.
