Etihad Stadium officials are thought to have brought in espionage experts to investigate the security breach of their online performance analysis system

In the murky world of big *business, corporate espionage has always been a weapon used by the unscrupulous to make sure they stay ahead of rivals, writes Steve Bates of the Sunday People .

But Emirates Marketing Project’s shocking *discovery that their worldwide scouting database could have been hacked by an employee of a rival Premier League club will rock football to its core.

With new boss Manuel Pellegrini set to take charge , City believe their online Scout7 performance analysis system – *holding detailed scouting reports of every player they have targeted at home and around the globe – has been infiltrated.

An investigation is now under way to uncover the full *extent of the *security breach at the Etihad Stadium , how it happened – and who the culprits are.

I understand City have brought in computer espionage experts to examine any *possible trails

"...rock football to its core..."

Ha! I somehow doubt it.

Yeh exactly nobody gives a flying fudge abut the brick club that won the lottery

Its funny as, dammit Sheikh we think somebody has hacked us, why you say that, well we wanted Falcao and he has gone to Monaco, dammit another one got away

I know some clubs specialise in certain countries ie Wigan and their South American signings but surely just about all Premier League scouts cover all areas of the world and there is barely any players a club would sign that other teams' scouts wouldn't know about?

Everyone can buy a copy of Football Manager and have access to the same database that City have.

As well as signing top players for their first team I think City have been fairly active signing youngsters for their academy/u18/u21 sides for the future.

I imagine that kind of scouting information could be quite valuable.

other teams can just sign them on a free in a few years after the contract expires and they haven't had a sniff of first team football.

Of course if they fail entirely with their youth development it won't matter. Having spent considerable money on youth players and on bringing in Begiristain with experience from the Barcelona academy, arguably the best in the world, I don't think that's a foregone conclusion.

I wonder if people would have the same attitude if the alleged hacking had been targeted at Manchester United, Ajax or Barcelona. Obviously City aren't in the same category as those clubs when it comes to youth development, but they are trying to develop that part of the club similarly to ourselves.

Teams that can go out and spend £40m on a player every summer are not in the same category as any other club. What is the point of a youth academy when you can fill the side with stars every season? can, not will. Youth academies are for legacy. Legacy is negated by unlimited funds.

If, at some point, that funding disappears, then there is a need to bring players through but right now they are just providing nice facilities for talented kids. That's all. There is no established route to the first team like Ajax or Barcelona.
