I know it isn’t, but I’m still curious as to how fans have mistreated him. He was never booed, mocked or jeered like Vicario or Davinson Sanchez. If anything I think our fans were remarkably patient with him given his poor disciplinary record that really let us down last season in particular and his inconsistent displays. Not to mention tinkling off before the last game of the season.

I don't agree that he was mistreated, I just think everything he did was blown way out of proportion. He got 2 straight red cards in his time and you'd think he ran around two footing every player and their baby the way he's spoken about.

He accumulated 6 red card in total and 4 in the PL. I don’t believe any other player has received as many in his time at the club. The United one was particularly costly as it was in the middle of a wretched run of form and a full blown injury crisis. He probably got away with a few more as well. Most of them from memory were needless as well, as in not last ditch tackles to save a goal. Officials look at things like excessive force when judging tackles, Romero went very close to that line. Didn’t always go over it, but crossed it too many times IMO.

He may feel he has outgrown us but judging from the lack of interest in a world cup winner in his prime from a big European or any Premiership club except AM and possibly the scum as a fall back, and at what is a basement bargain transfer price... I would say his feeling is not exactly shared universally.....

I think it's that typical ugly human trait...if you're useful to someone the complaints/vitriol will be dialled right down.

Romero was undoubtedly a quality player. We needed him and his qualities, you keep that, and him onside.

I don't think anyone has suggested we finished 17th because of him. But as a leader you're expected to lead, to which he wasn't on the pitch half the time, did his generous fair of fudge ups on the pitch and the less said about off the pitch the better.

You wouldn't expect your captain to be responsible for everything, but you would expect your captain to have very good form on and off the pitch to lead by example and elevate the team - he didn't, and we finished where we finished....

If Spurs spent 60 million on a player with his injury record/missed games it would be questioned by the fan base.

It's weird I think he should have been sent off more than he was as he actually got away with a few dodgy tackles but then the ones he did get sent off for he probably shouldn't have. I'll still argue to the day I die that his sending off Vs Chelsea was ridiculous and likewise I didn't really feel like the one versus United last season should have been a sending off either, but like you say there are plenty he did get away with that warranted cards.

On the balance of things I thought he was a good player and defender but somewhat overhyped by our fan base but still very good at times but not a good match with VDV which as a partnership I always found questionable. It looked good on paper but in reality in the pitch I never felt it looked cohesive.

So for me one of the two needed to go this summer and Romero is the one who carries way more baggage so it makes sense that he's the one that we've moved on. His price doesn't surprise me either because as I've said many times on here he isn't regarded as highly outside of our fan base, so the demand that matches his profile was always going to be quite slim. There is just no great clamour for his signature so you have to take what you can get for him.

Well, I didn’t make the connection between his captaincy and finishing 17th but to be fair he rescued points for us on a couple of occasions and if we didn’t have them we’d have finished 18th.

I think that was often overplayed, I just had a gander and he missed plenty of internationals too with injuries. I get we are Spurs fans and for us its Spurs or nothing, but its clear that Argentinians are clearly more patriotic than we are to the extreme, that said he was clearly unfit at the world cup too, so despite fighting to be there, it wasn't really a country over club situation either.
 
I can show you any game in the PL and find you way more yellows and reds if the laws were applied. I’m talking every PL game across 38 fixtures. So to say Romero could have had more is just the norm to be fair.

How many times have we watched games together as a set of Spurs fans and named players that got a single yellow but could have had 4 or 5? How many games or entire comps have been changed by the refs?

Romero isn’t special in this regard

He rescued points for us, but cost us just as many if not more between poor defending, red cards, and not being available leaving us with a makeshift back 4 at times.

To be fair there was a period under Pochettino where we were selling fringe players for good money. Wimmer, Bentaleb, Mason, Chadli, Townsend.

When we start doing well as a club again the players we are selling will look more attractive to other clubs. Yes it’s not entirely Spence & Romeros fault but they have been part of one of the worst defenses in the league over the course of 2 seasons.
 
I am so glad he is gone. So many reasons built up into resentment towards him. Red Cards, Stupid fouls for penalties, not fit for us but fit for argentina every single time, wanting to not be here for our run in and constantly flirting with other clubs to leave. Never should have been captain. On his day he could was amazing and could have been a legend. But for all the reasons above. bye bye !
