Cristian Romero

Could’ve been a Tottenham great. Maybe should have been one. As it is,I’m not sorry to see him go. I feel that he let the club down badly last season when we needed him most, as a senior pro, a top class defender and captain. His conduct at the World Cup was abysmal and the fact that he has gone so cheap is a telling indicator that absolutely no one - NO ONE - except AM would touch him. Which, given the way AM players behave is no surprise. He’ll fit right in.

Goodbye Romero. I believe that THFC will be a far more harmonious place without you, from dressing room to the stands. Ergo, I won’t miss you.
 
Good luck to him. I supported him throughout and felt extremely agitated by those that claim ‘he preferred Argentina’, made up narratives about him and his trip to Argentina last season. When we barely know any of the facts and much of it was dismissed by De Zerbi. He was our captain yet hounded out by so many of our supporters.

I understand that he wasn’t perfect but he was our captain. He may have been a bit headless at times or appeared to be but you know why? He had so much defensive cover to do and so would run around trying to put fires out everywhere. He was a bit reckless at times but at other times he was determined strong and gave his all. The referees decided he was trouble and sent him off for challenges that would barely see a booking for other players.

So time came for a fresh challenge for him.

Thanks to Cristian Romero and all the very best to him at Atletico.

Thinking about it he's 28...from his POV he's probably thinking I've given my best years to a club that's been a bit of a basket case (EL win aside). Yes, he was part of it, but I'd imagine he's more than happy to be out the door.
 
Such a weird transfer all around. One of the best defenders in the world leaves and it’s apparently brilliant for the club. It’ll be a far more harmonious place? Do me a favour. Based on what??

No doubt he’ll be a huge success at Atletico. At least it all happened fairly smoothly and we’ve already got our replacements in.

Why do people insist this means anything? How is "he's not good enough" the ONLY possible explanation for the fact that only 3 of Europe's biggest teams were reportedly in for him? It's only rolled out by people with the narrative. Anyone who can critically think could give you any other number of reasons why.

His replacement, Jan Paul van Hecke, was apparently not wanted by anyone else. I guess he's just as brick with your limited thinking?
 
This feels like one of those romances that was magical over certain periods but never quite made it for various reasons. Partly him, partly the league and how it is adjudicated, partly our expectations for how a CB should operate.

Regardless, I will always have fond memories of a true talent and a maverick who made the game more interesting to watch.

We could hold out for another £5-10M for Spence & Romero and have them at the training ground, even playing in games to “not dilute their value” until Sep 1.

We could have waited until later in the summer and haggled an extra £5-10M off the Van Hecke & Tonalo deals.

We could have no been prepared to pay any more than Man Utd were to get Fernandes.

This is backing the manager!
 
Sad to see him go, but it was inebitable and probably best for bogh parts. Great player, hampered by inconsistency, recklessness and bad reputation. Think he could've been massive under De Zerbi, but it was not to be.

My take on Romero: he was excellent on his day and had a solid campaign in the Europa League when we won the competition. Ultimately, though, he was just too unreliable for me. The reckless challenges, repeated injuries, and the fact that he only showed up on the final day of last season, seemingly due to peer pressure, when the club needed him for moral support, all left a sour taste.

I find the narrative that he’s unfairly targeted by officials rather comical. He’s a dirty player, it’s as simple as that. He’s built a reputation for making brainless tackles, and it’s his own fault that referees are reluctant to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I genuinely wish him all the best, but I feel this transfer is ultimately the best outcome for all parties.

Would have loved to have seen Christian in a great Spurs team. A Spurs team where he didn't feel he needed to do everyone else's job for them and he could have actually focused on being the best centre half in the league. I would have loved to have seen him under managers who knew how to build great defensive setups rather than the ones we had. Saying that, I would love to see Howard Webb walked out the building with his P45 with half his team. That doesn't seem to be happening either :tearsofjoy:

Levy would have got a better price for him which was the upside of his approach (when we did manage to sell). The downside is that he would have held to the last minute, never signed Senesi or Van Hecke, and we'd have been scrambling around for a replacement.

The downside of "just go out and get the players you want" is that you do weaken your negotiating position when it comes selling players because everyone knows we have to shift Romero.

This current strategy should see us with a stronger team though so as long as we can afford it, it's all good.
 
Romero trying to cope with Flick’s high line would’ve been entertaining but think that joining Simeone’s Argentine mafia at Atletico should suit Cuti down to the ground.

Agree - that is exactly what Levy would have done... and then caved it for even less favourable terms on deadline day!!

For all the flak we gave them over the season, I must say that Lange and Vini are laser focused on supporting RDZ in real terms.

It is pertinent to point out that the "big" fees Levy managed to get were for players who were heavily in demand and who we were happy to keep e.g. Berba, Bale, Harry... (Modric went to Real for a pretty bargain price). Neither of those apply to Romero and Spence...

Yes you're right, this 'one of the best defenders in the world' that made a hell of a lot of fudge ups on and off the pitch - our captain fantastic guided us to the dizzy heights of 17th in the 60% of league games he was actually available for.

I live in fear of how this squad will cope this season without him....
