Cristian Romero

I read today that this was about to be the new era of no superstars at Spurs, but I felt like screaming at the screen, that they don't come much bigger than Romero. We may not have a world beating forward in the side now but we are blessed with a monster of a centre half who in his own way is a world class talent. I suspect our next worldie is likely to be Bergvall.

People really don't give him the credit he's due. The man is a World Cup-winner. And all of his teammates - including the greatest player to have ever lived in Leo Messi - respect and recognize him as one of the best defenders on the planet.

Yes he's had fitness issues. Yes he's had the occasional screw-up (who hasn't).

But at the end of this coming season, Cristian Romero will have given us 5 years of his career, during which he won the World Cup and dragged us to our first trophy in 17 years. And all while we've had one of the most topsy-turvy spells of the last quarter-century, going from 4th to 8th to 5th to 17th.

That's commitment. Not every player shows the sort of loyalty to us that Son did. But it's enough that a world-class player gave us five years - and if he signs on for a few more, he'll be up there with Son, Kane et al when the time comes to evaluate Spurs legends. If he doesn't, he'll leave next summer with our gratitude.

There has been so many of us who have wanted him sold. Spurs supporters who jumped and claimed that he didn’t want to be at the club, and way ahead of Atletico’s reported bids. I’ve constantly backed him, even if sometimes feeling like a lone voice.

He’s played so much football and rarely been given the time off to rest and recuperate. He’s played through the World Cup, through the Copa America, he’s been hugely successful and led the way. Of course he’s tired at times, of course he’s more likely to be injured.

But he’s one of the very very best centre backs in the World. He is a World Class centre back. We just need to help him to be the best that he can be. We need to give him time out occasionally so that he can represent both us and Argentina to the best of his ability.

A player of his quality deserves to represent his country and if he has to miss a match for us in order to play for his country then I welcome that. I would set him a private plane and look after him. We should have squad depth that affords us to be able to rest him. If we don’t then that’s on us, not on him. We need to help him to stay at the top of his game, not attack him when he dares to make a mistake. Every player makes mistakes but not every supporter of the player’s club automatically moves to attack mode.

I want him to be our new captain. I want him to sign a new contract. Whether he is, and whether he does, we will have to wait and see. But for me the day that we lose him will be the start of the period of time during which many may finally appreciate and realise what we will have lost.

I think people on here do give him the credit he deserves to be honest. The only issue of contention is when people start branding him world class, when he constantly has a brain fart in him and it's not an exaggeration to say that.

He has put in plenty of top class performances, but they have been mixed in with a lot of poor performances or games where he has cost us. He gets credit where it's due, for example the last two months where he was brilliant leading up to the Europa League win. That is the barometer for where you have to be CONSISTENTLY to be considered world class. If that is the level he remains at now then fantastic. And for balance, he is 27 (I actually thought he was a couple of years younger) so is only now approaching his peak years and perhaps now is the time he is going to show the consistency and remove the rashness/red mist he has often showed. And he is definitely our best defender still by some way, so certainly hope we keep him.....

I think every centre back makes errors. We just notice Romero’s more as he’s our player so we focus on what he does. I dare say that supporters of other teams notice their own players make mistakes.
