British Steel

Sad news about Port Talbot works with the closure of the iron ore furnaces and loss of thousands of jobs. The new replacement arc electrical furnaces don't actually produce steel from ore. They melt down scrap steel.
Tata of India own the site.
British Steel was sold to a Chinese company in 2020 !!

Ai is going to replace millions of jobs in the next 10 years.

We're going to seriously think about how our economy works going forward. It's the car replacing the horse. The problem is that this time. Humans are the horse. Ai might create new jobs, but if those can slso be done better by ai?

I think the key is to stop pretending that work and GDP are the be all and end all.

Universal basic income to give everyone an actual chance at a happy comfortable life rather than pretending to be busy or doing flimflam pretend work

Only if governments let it. They are elected to serve the people not big business. Millions unemployed, who's going to pay the taxes? Not big business. Technology is there to serve man not replace him, if governments can't see this they are walking into a dystopian future.

If it’s not being used, doesn’t make sense to keep producing it.

I don't know enough about it so will bow to your expertise. Dunno why it wasn't being used though. Price of steel is high. Unless they want to keep it high by limiting production (like opec with oil).

I have no idea either, but recycling is generally a good thing.

It's not going to be one thing though. It will be thousands of different. A company develops an ai that can answer telephone calls and questions. That's all the call centres gone. You now have ai that can draw art, you just type what picture you want. Graphic designers for posters etc... out of work. Voice actors, localisers, lawyers, writers. This is all happening now.

Ai is developing at an exponential rate. Hopefully after covid people have some understanding of what exponential means. Bt have already said they plan to cut their workforce by 55,000 by 2030 due to ai. It's progress you won't stop it. As other countries won't then they'll be far more productive than you.

A universal basic income may have to be introduced.

I don't understand the cycle but somebody has to produce new steel surely ? Recycle is good but how many times can you recycle steel ?
Is the model of importing so much a good one ?

You define making mankind redundant progress? How will all these worthless humans survive without an income? Governments can't afford to support the current levels. Universal basic income of course that's an answer, implementing it there's the challenge, AI will come up with the solution, reduce the number of unproductive units. It's not a problem as long as the masses can play with their smartphones as they walk off the clifftop.

It's technological progress. You can't undiscover something.

Other ways to deal with it would be to massively cut hours worked by people. A 3 day weekend for one.

We are going to have to relook at how our economies work. But it will have to be done on a global scsle.

The world working together, please have a look at the news.
