Spurs want £40m-rated Johnson
Tottenham Hotspur will try to secure the signing of Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson with a cash-plus-player deal (Tom Roddy writes).

Forest are looking for a fee of about £40 million for the Wales forward, who is also wanted by West Ham United. Chelsea had considered making a move for the 22-year-old this summer but have withdrawn their interest after it was understood that the player’s preference would be a move to Tottenham.

Forest have already rejected a £35 million offer for Johnson from Brentford this summer, a deal that would have broken the west London club’s transfer record. Forest have struggled to land the transfer targets intended to strengthen Steve Cooper’s squad this summer but are resigned to the likelihood that Johnson, who scored ten goals for them last season, will leave.

Tottenham will look to exchange fringe members from their squad to convince Forest to complete the move, which would help to cut the size of Ange Postecoglou’s large group of about 35 players.

Forest are keen on adding centre backs and Davinson Sánchez, Tottenham’s 27-year-old Colombia defender, is one of the possible figures to be involved in a deal.

Tottenham will suggest other options but are also willing to complete a cash-only deal. They are looking to reinvest the money made through the £94.5 million sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and want to add goals and pace to Postecoglou’s attacking options.

Spurs have so far signed James Maddison from Leicester City, Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli and Alejo Véliz from Rosario Central. They are still looking to sell Hugo Lloris, the former club captain, while Sergio Reguilón and Japhet Tanganga could also leave.

Tottenham preparing to launch bid for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson... with the £50m-rated Welsh international preferring a move to Spurs over Chelsea and West Ham
  • Chelsea and Tottenham had also been considering bids for the 22-year-old
  • Johnson's preference should he leave Forest though is understood to be Spurs
Tottenham are preparing to launch their bid for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson.

The Wales international is valued around £50million by Forest who have already rejected offers over £35m from Brentford this window.

Chelsea and West Ham have also been considering bids for the 22-year old flyer but his preference should he go is understood to be Tottenham.

They are readying an offer which could yet include players as Forest are struggling to land all of their targets.

Centre back Davinson Sanchez is one possibility though there are a number of other fringe players Tottenham are willing to trade if they can fit into Forest's wage structure.

Johnson's preference is to join Tottenham (manager Ange Postecoglou pictured left) over the likes of Chelsea (boss Mauricio Pochettino pictured right) and West Ham who are also keen

Tottenham want an extra goal threat following the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. They want pace too and believe Johnson has the right profile of being able to fit their system and play across the front line.

Johnson is understood to prefer Tottenham as he believes he will have a greater chance of playing regularly and establishing himself.

Chelsea have discussed the merits of signing him but are now weighing up other options.

Brentford had been prepared to break their transfer fee record to land Johnson but after being rebuffed have since switched sights to Nico Gonzalez of Fiorentina.

They had a £25m offer rejected earlier this month for the Argentine winger but have now gone back with a £34m bid.

Johnson believes he will have a greater chance of playing regularly at Tottenham.

I'm not a fan of Brennan Johnson at all.
The only way this makes sense is if we swap him directly for 4 unwanted players.
And then the main benefit is we swap 4 large wages for 1 small wage.
I don't think he would improve us at all.

Always thought he’s looked good, would be a good signing and probably a starter ahead of Kulu on current form.

like Gibbs White too.
Yeah I'm not sure what games those above have been watching but I've seen him for a couple of seasons and he always makes things happen.

But regardless of what I think, I'm comfortable with whoever our scouting team see as a good fit these days....

I like him a lot and think he'd suit Ange's style well. £40m is a bit much, but it ain't my money so if that's who Ange wants let's get him.

Would be a good move for all concerned if dier went to forest instead of davo.

£40m is a very reasonable price IMO for a talented, young, association trained forward.

It’s definitely not as crazy as other fees, but it’s still a lot for someone who’s had one season in the Premier League.

Like I say, I’d really like him in regardless of the fee.

Except Forest perhaps?…. :D

Dier needs a new challenge, an opportunity to prove himself again, he’s become a side note and if he's not careful he will become a forgotten player.
Forest could do a lot worse in courting him as a chance to get back in the game.
