Apple TV

OK It is now sorted except for one minor issue - no sound. I have put in an audio jack yet no sound. hmm m preferences

Is the line in a headphone type socket or a red and white phono socket?

Ok Boonie - need your assistance. I think I have found the cause - I need a red and white something or another. But I need it to connect to a headphone type socket on my mac. I dont think I have a line in on my tv so need two (red and white phono thingy)

ARRRGHHHHHHHHH I have spent like 40 quid on cables. fudges sakes.

Will this work Thudd?

Yes.. for the sound only it will.

Early laptops were not made to use on the big screen so people got around it by using two leads.

One for the picture

One for the sound.

In the last 2 or 3 years laptops have been fitted with HDMi's which help carry both and in HD.

I spent like 18 months going into PCWORLD asking whether any laptops had any HDMi connection. Did they fooking listen!

Funny that with Porn being done in HD mirrored the introduction of HDMi as standard.

Video should help

Mate thanks for this thats been helpful.

I just brought a cable for 99p from Amazon. So hopefully this will resolve the issues. I connected the mac to the tv and the picture was perfect (although it took a while to sort out the mirroring side of things) but the audio in just wouldnt work.

This will hopefully work and if it doesnt you owe me 99p and Boonie owes me 12 quid.

What you needed was

Mini DVI to HDMi adaptor... which then use a normal HDMi cable to your tv

mini to RCA Audio the same length as the normal HDMi cable above.

Couple of things, they may sound stupid, but then again people use scart for HD

As I said above about the cable length being the same, make sure that you don't get like 0.5m

Check where you are putting the laptop whilst your hands are tossing away.

DHSF can you link up what you bought so to make sure.

Its a 3.5 mini to rca

3.5 is your standard headphone socket.

HDMI is 3m the RCA one i brought is also 3m. So I think after six pages of gobbledygook we have established the appropriate connections

I wont really be tossing - no need to. Got a lady friend to do it for me.

Don't understand.. Amazon don't fleece the public in its products and its prices, although they too like to pay as little tax as it possibly can.

A bit like overpaid footballers getting paid overseas I guess.

Tax laws have not kept up with the online revolution. Everyone used to buy on the highstreet, now they are purchasing from tax havens.

I you don't like Apple don't buy the products. My point is Amazon are actively avoiding hundreds of millions in VAT and corp tax from billions of sales via a Luxembourg based tax haven.

any business which doesn't pay as little tax as it can legally get away with is doing a massive disservice to its shareholders

For me one of the reasons the economy is fudged. Far too many loop holes for well off people to take the tinkle.

EDIT - Unless its me taking advantage of loop holes.

the term loophole annoys me, it implies deceit, when its actually a legal option, its the govt's job to close these (yet also encourage business)

also, saw this today and it made me chuckle

Only trouble with going apple is that if you ever change format it becomes a pain in the arse

Why? And cannot the same be said about the other brands?

Thanks mate but, I don't believe in jailbreaking (or tunning up cars in general) - have a fundamental / prinicpal probelm with that.

How come? ItÔÇÖs not like itÔÇÖs illegal or anything. Having a jailbroken apple tv opens it for 3rd party apps like Spotify, XBMC, Plex and more. Plus you get the added bonus that more formats work with it. Imo itÔÇÖs kind of stupid to buy an apple tv and not jailbreak it, thatÔÇÖs when it really works as it should.

Also, the monkey is right about the hdmi-discussion. DonÔÇÖt ever believe someone trying to convince you to buy expensive hdmi-cables, especially if said person works in the industry ;) The only reason to put extra money in that sort of thing is the build quality, and that only becomes relevant if youÔÇÖre going to stretch the cable for long distances or remove it often, which 99% of users donÔÇÖt do.

Need help please

I got my RCA cable - but its not white and red. It is black and red - will this work? Because it aint fudgein working as it stands.

Ok I figured this brick out and its finally working.

Basically all this nonsense was because I have four HDMI ports in my TV and only one works with a dvi and separate audio input. I didnt even need the fudging RCA cable. I used the original 3.5mm audio jack lead.

fudges sakes.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread and we should all celebrate this glorious and momentous occasion.
