Politics, politics, politics

For experts in voter behaviour or cognitive science, however, this is unsurprising. Humans do not instinctively enjoy changing their minds. Admitting that you were wrong, especially when the original decision has huge ramifications, is a painful and destabilising experience that the brain tends to resist. Research into this kind of denial has given us concepts such as cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias.

“When you have a strong view about something, you’re likely to reject information that’s contrary to your view, reject the source of the information and rationalise the information,” says Jane Green, professor of political science at the University of Manchester and co-director of the British Election Study. “We select information that’s consistent with our views, because it’s more comfortable and reaffirming.” In fact, it’s physically pleasurable. Some recent studies of confirmation bias indicate that consuming information that supports our beliefs actually produces a dopamine rush.

Is that the Grauniad genuinely talking about confirmation bias? It's part of the biggest dumb student echo chamber out there.

£45b is only a couple of years worth of NHS bus money. Well worth it for all that sovereignty.

The bus money was a gross figure, so we need to use an exit bill of £100b if we want to make a comparison.

This is just settling the bills for an orderly exit. We will end up paying more for involvement in EU programmes and market access.

This is an interesting measure for calculating the hit to the economy (currently £300m a week).

Even £100b we'll start being in profit within 6.5 years (based on our current net contribution of £15b a year).

It's never been about the money though - pay what they want then get eyes back on the real prize.

I just don't know what to say....

Out of interest what would it take for You to admit you were wrong about Brexit?

I agree with GB that it is worth paying this money for an orderly exit. The cost of a disorderly one would be far higher.

This is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of cost to us. Setting up our own institutions and infrastructure to replace that of the EU is going to cost a fortune and will take a decade to put in place.

The hit to our economy will cost far more than EU membership. We will still end up paying for reduced access and the supposed benefit of being able to agree our own trade deals will take a decade to be realised and will be worth far less than the one we are walking away from.

All the whilst we trash our reputation.

The whole thing is madness.

We have also wasted six months of negotiation time and ended up paying more or less what they were asking for anyway whilst getting everyone's backs up.

Wait until the Brexiters realise that the next stage is discussions about the shape of a future trade deal and not negotiations on a deal. That will also be where the cakeism will end. The decisions made to keep the Tory party together now will have real impact on our options.

Do you think Brexit will occur? I'm still sticking to my guns that it will all be monumental waste of time and that we'll exit the exit.

Wrong about what? The principle that countries should be governed by sovereign national governments, rather than unaccountable theocracies. You can't buy my belief in that for any price.

The Ireland border is a tough one. They are trying to kick it down the road but that won't wash.

It's a very easy one in my book

And give the oranges dual citizenship so they can move back to Scotland if they really want.

Apparently the latest stats suggest the Republicans are now about 38,000 people short of a majority (and shrinking every month). They'll have their 50% +1 before the end of the decade.

It needs something monumental for that to happen and a general election before March 2019.

I think that we will end up taking a far longer transition deal than the government currently admits though. We will not be ready to leave until at least the middle of the next decade. There has been no movement on this and the institutions and infrastructure we will need will take a long time to set up and establish. On top of this, a future trade deal will take far longer to negotiate and ratify than the government will admit.

Nothing to worry about though, I am sure that it is all covered in the impact assessments.

Congratulations. You've just found the way of crashing the coalition, causing a general election and stopping Brexit.

We always have been sovereign. The Exiting the EU bill makes this clear. We will end up trading sovereignty for trade deals worth far less than the one we are leaving.
