Vincent Janssen

Okay, so - er - who would you drop? Dier? Wanyama (unthinkable!), Who?

Lloris

Dier
Toby
Verts

Walker
Wanyama
Winks
Davies

Son
Eriksen
Janssen

That's one way to do it, and you can easily make this a 3-5-2 by dropping Eriksen deeper into midfield to effectively play as a 10 with Son playing up top just off Janssen (when in possession, this would quickly become a fluid 4 in attack anyway)

PERSONALLY, and this is simply because I think Son off the bench is a tremendous option and one he excels with, I would be tempted to go

With this, you absolutely need Moose to push on and do what is against his natural state/take a few fudging shots from 25/30 yards!!!! But if you equally consider that Janssen can wear down the Soton defence/perhaps score too (!!!!) even if all he does is batter them for 60 minutes, it means when Son comes on, he does so with a turn of pace and burst of speed against a tiring side. In which case I'd sub Moose and go 3-4-3 (given that if we do this we'd be looking to take the game).

In Poch (however) I trust...

So just when we've lost our leading goalscorer you'd cheerfully risk leaving out our second highest, the brilliant Dele who is also currently on fire with 14 goals in his last 17 appearances - and every one of them from open play! - to make room for a rookie who's scored just one from open play in 33 - and that from the bench against a League 1 side when we'd already gone four up?

Just not happening, is it! :D

WHAAAAT? No Dele - surely you cannot be serious with those selections ?!?!?!

Indeed, Steff gets so excited and optimistic he starts imagining Dembele leaping 12 yards skyward and thundering volleys through the weak bodies of mere mortals... and forgets Bamidele Alfonso Alli

I have issue with dropping Dembele and Alli in the first of your two Kaneless line ups. Two of the best five in our squad.

Much as I was pleased to see Janssen score and wish for the lad to succeed I think we are letting the euphoria cloud our judgement. I don't think there is any chance Poch will trust Janssen to lead the attack from the start and certainly not a the expense of Alli and Son, our top scorers after Kane. That would just be madness. He will be the impact sub rather than Son imo.

Loved his smile of relief - that goal meant a lot.
yeah it was good to see that it was rather subdued and meaningful response. and not the all-guts-and-glory hero celebration.

i agree that the response of the players tell a lot. they really celebrated it like they knew how much the goal meant to Janssen.

i really don't know if he will score more, but I do think he is a nice young chap and gets along fine with the others.

Well as the song goes, I just don't think he ....

But yeah, he was just indulging in a little flight of fantasy. That right Steff?

I have never played football on any high level, but isn't psychologically harder to score from an penalty compared to open play?

Yeah, there's more pressure on it. Are you saying that you don't think that not scoring a goal from open play wouldn't affect the guy?

Personally i think it would affect him, at least a bit, seeing as he is now Holland's main international striker.
However, i did read that the reason he was bought was also his mental fortitude to keep fighting and not back down, like others who would have gone through similar droughts (Soldado perhaps?)

I guess if the mantra is 'well, he only scores penalties but not from open play' then the pressure to score from open play becomes greater. When you are only given a few minutes here and there to make that happen, the pressure becomes greater. Self perpetuating.

True enough but top strikers like Kane and Aguero seem to just shrug off or even feed off the pressure. Saying that to his great credit he has kept on going, and that's a good sign.

It's doubtless been immensely frustrating as well as deeply humiliating for him but through it all he' kept his head up and never hidden. Cannot help but admire him for that.

Not at all, surely it bothers him, but maybe in a different way, more like Why I am not putting myself in a more "scoreable" position in the open play?

And showed great humility in his celebration on Sunday. In fact he celebrated Son's goal more. He seems like a nice, well liked guy and I hope he can step up with more goals now Kane is sidelined. Opposing teams have hopefully underestimated him.

oh dear, he scores one goal against a league 1 team that didnt turn up and now he's the messiah and I hate "the he seems such a nice guy" comments as well, so soldado-esque, yeh nice guys finish last or don't score, maybe poch will give him more playing time, he is still one of the worst strikers Ive seen in our colours, his movement is appalling, he has no pace and for a big guy he's crap in the air, but hey he seems like a "nice guy".
