I expect he was told to go central and get into the box, as we needed a goal and Kane was floating. Also, it seemed to me we went two up top in view of the time running down.
I would have gambled on Vincent then rather than switch Son.

I really don't think we need Dembele, Wanyama and Dier in the same team, unless we are going to play 4-3-3, with them holding the 3 mid positions, Dier looking after the RB, Dembele the LB and Wanyama holding. I would only play that against certain teams.
Dier should not be used as a CB, it's him or Wanyama.

Pochettino's insistence on fitting in Dier on the first 11 is very worrisome. For me it is simple. Bench Dier and give Wimmer much needed match practice. If Wimmer throws a fit that he wants to leave Spurs this summer, we will say he has a bad attitude. His first game this season was as a LB vs Chelsea away. He was then left out of the team again and has only played infrequently. We then say Wimmer has played poorly when he is out of match practice and hasnt played consistently. Compare it to Janssen who at least got minutes on his belt when Kane was injured. Meanwhile Dier has stunk up the joint how many games in a row? Poch has to allow true competition for shirts and not just use training performances to judge players. I still remember how he stuck with Soldado despite Kane scoring goals. We keep on making excuses for Dier!! That is what can get me upset with Poch - his loyalty to certain players.

As someone already said - we would have won yesterday 11 vs 11. It was a bit tougher when it was 10 vs 12.

Doubt that we would have won. We would have won with the right team selection but not the 11 that played. Dele Alli was petulant all game and doing nothing. Yesterday for me clearly showed me players that are quality. Lloris, Toby, Jan, Walker, Dembele, Wanyama, Eriksen, Winks. Need to get a boot up the backsides of Kane, Dier, Alli, and Davies. The first 3 need to sit down and realise that they aint achieved anything yet. Davies is not Danny Rose but he does his job in the way he best knows how. Son when he is used well is dangerous.

Wimmer I think deserves a game if only for the benefit of doubt as he showed such good form deputising for Verts last season. I can't believe he can't fit in with Vets and Toby in a 3. As he can actually pass long and short. Verts as a libero with licence to roam forward.
However, any 3 only works if Rose is fit. Trippier is suited to cover Walker as RWB but Davies is a LB in a 4, only, not an effective LWB. He just doesn't have the skill to beat a man.

In fact, our squad is short of such players in general.

I agree that we were terrible in the first leg, and generally have been very bad away in Europe for quite some time now. No excuse for going out against the 8th placed team in Belgium over two legs either way, but I thought we were unlucky yesterday.
 
Probably already said on here but how many gent fans last night? Looked 10-12k? Also what was the significance of the 51st minute with the lights?
 
We played badly in Wembley and our coach excused for the performance. Normally he "wants to see us play good and beautifull football", he said, "but this was our worst performance in Europe since he is our coach. We were lucky.". Then again, we played without our best players, Neto and Asare, and saw two other keyplayers, Dejaegere and Milisevic, injured during the game. Matton, Verstraete (the 17 year old who only played one official game), Gershon, Esiti, Saief normally don't make the starting 11. But I think we were very good in Gent and could have deserved a second goal there.

Tottenham, definitely the favorite Premier League team amongst Gent-fans, surely have better players, but I think some of the English players are overrated (and the Premier League might be overrated as well).

Furthermore, I was astonished about the attitude your media, players and supporters showed towards this game, even after having lost in Gent. As if they played a second division team from Luxemburg.
- last year Anderlecht, outplayed several times by Gent, was the better team against Tottenham
- Tottenham never could win in Belgium
- Gent got 10 points in the CL last year and outplayed Valencia and Lyon

51st minute we sing this song for the Gentfans who passed away, and especially for Luc De Vos, a songwriter who lived in Gent and died, 51 years old.

Oh come on of course we would have won. All we needed to do was convert a couple more of the many clear one-on-ones we created after we'd gone down to 10.

Also, apart from his wayward shooting I thought Kane played very well. His hold-up play was excellent, it's just he forgot to put on his Fulham shooting boots.

I'm not. We were tinkle poor in the first leg, and ultimately paid the price for it. I thought we played well yesterday though, and would've been able to carry our good momentum a lot better had the ref not done his best to slow us down time and again. But again, not an excuse for going out, we can blame that on a poor first leg and on a stupid decision by Alli.

That arrogance is quite typical of English teams, fans and the English media. I'd say it's one of the reasons English sides often struggle in Europe. They go in with the mentality that they're this professional team way above the standards of their opponent and that they'll win just by showing up (as we clearly showed in our away match against you), and when you do, you'll lose (as the opponent will obviously be 100% up for it against a high profile team).

You missed the point. We haven't been dog brick at WHL, and we are playing 19 league games at Wembley next year and the rest away!
 
Ranieri and Deli took the the press heat off Pochettino last nigh.

Although I personally thought he did little wrong last night and the majority of the team played well.

Gent got lucky last night, but we lost it in the first leg. Fair play to thier fans.
 
So. That horrible moment when you wake up in the morning and all is good - and then 3 seconds later your memory catches up with the rest of your brain...
That was disappointing because we played so well. A bit more composure in front of goal (where have I heard that before?) and we'd be lauding the performances of Eriksen, Walker, Dembele and others instead of bemoaning a moment of rashness and a moment of bad defending.
What struck me though was even after their second, I still felt we might pull it back. The West Ham game came to mind. One of the things that gives me hope with this team is that they generally don't drop heads and give up.
Ultimately though we were the masters of our own misfortune. We lost the tie in the first leg where, in contrast to the 'never give up' attitude, we just didn't really turn up at all. Another valuable lesson for the players.

Agree with the comments about Son. He was great when he came on, using the space on the left to get forward and behind the defence. Then suddenly, he just wasn't there and instead there was a big gaping hole crying out for someone to run into.
And I don't get the Janssen thing at all. He should have been off that bench and on as soon as Gent's second goal went in (if not earlier). In fairness once Poch decided to bring him on it took an age for the game to stop for the change to be made. But for that he probably would have got all of 4 minutes instead of 2. I feel for him, I don't know what Poch is expecting him to do with these pointless minutes where he has no chance to get into a game.

In my heart of hearts I knew something had to give this season. We don't have enough to fight on three fronts. But whilst I didn't dismiss Gent as anything like a bye to the next round, I am probably guilty of assuming we would ultimately have enough to see it through. I hope the players learn their lessons more quickly than I do!
