Ben Davies

I like both of our left backs. For me they both bring different pluses to our game.
Poch will have far more information at hand when he chooses. We are just playing favourites to large extent.

Couldn't agree more with you. I think that they have quite different qualities that will be needed for different games. I do agree that Rose hasn't quite hit the heights of last season but that happens to players, and it's not as if he's playing brick! Having a decent squad means that you need different options available to you and adequate backup for injuries. Davies and Rose, or Rose and Davies is a pretty good combination and I can't think of many teams that have a much better pairing than that.

The Davies corner routine (rolled to the edge of the box) which lead to him hitting the bar and almost breaking it was interesting to me, clearly practiced at Hotspur Way, clean striker of the ball. Should get him a goal or two if we continue to use this option as back up to the Toby near post delivery.

Tottenham's Ben Davies: I’d rather win the FA Cup than make the Champions League
Ben Davies would prefer to help Tottenham win the FA Cup than qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Spurs face Leicester in Sunday’s third-round tie at White Hart Lane as they aim to win the world’s oldest knockout competition for the first time since 1991.

And for Davies — one of the few Spurs players to have a domestic winners’ medal after he lifted the Capital One Cup with Swansea in 2013 — nothing can beat the joy of claiming a trophy.

“When you finish your career, while it might be nice to finish fourth and play in the Champions League, you’d much rather be an FA Cup winner,” the Welshman told Standard Sport.

“It’s a big tournament. The Premier League and the FA Cup are the two trophies everyone really wants to win. It’s a status, it’s a symbol.”

Tottenham have not won a trophy since 2008, when they lifted the Carling Cup — the only tournament they have won this century.

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad have been impressive this season, climbing to fourth in the table after losing only two of their 20 matches. Yet their inexperience is still apparent in certain games — at Arsenal and Everton, for example, they drew when they should have won — and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris fears their immaturity could cost them.

Even though Swansea’s form dipped after they triumphed at Wembley three years ago, Davies believes Spurs would not suffer similarly were they to win the FA Cup. Indeed, he believes it could be the making of them.

“At Swansea, perhaps we took our foot off the pedal a bit when we won the Capital One Cup,” said the 22-year-old. “We’d already reached our 40-point target in the League and then, looking back, we probably slipped off a little bit over the rest of the season.

“But at a club like Spurs, with the squad we’ve got, if we could win a trophy, it could really kick us on and give us the belief that it is possible. The FA Cup is a competition that, especially at Spurs, we have to go in to win it. Everybody here has a good mentality at the moment that we want to win games and we believe we can win them.”

I have to agree with Davies. Winning a trophy like FA Cup is much more memorable and enjoyable than merely playing in the Champs. League. In fact, I will prefer us to only play in the CL after we are ready to win both the league title and the CL !

that's his level i suppose - best team in england. some players have different ambitions.

Is he the only player in the squad that has actually won anything.

We should be really capable to do both,25 years....25 bleeding years since we won the thing,i think actually winning something is far better than getting knocked out in the 2nd round in late February of a competition thats needs far more investment than we are prepared to do now(we think twice in investing to win the premiership so how we going to invest to do well in a competition that only a select few can win it)

Lloris: French cup, French super cup, U19 European Championship
Vorm: On the bench as Swansea won the league cup
Walker: Football league championship
Fazio: Spanish cup, Europa League, Olympics, U20 World Cup
Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Eriksen: They played for Ajax, so tons.
Dembele: Dutch league, Dutch super cup
Chadli: Dutch cup, Dutch super cup

Majority of the rest have been runners-up at least once.

Made Mahrez look distinctly average, Albrighton too when he wandered over to that side. Loads of good involvements in the final third including some excellent crosses. Unlucky not to pick up an assist from one of them.

I wonder how long the "Ben Davies isn't suited to playing against quick tricky wingers like Mahrez" meme will survive?

To be fair to him I thought they were both pretty toss and it meant Davies could just focus on his game.

Davies is solid although you could argue that home against a counter attacking/defensive side Rose would have offered more

I think they were both average in part because our defenders did well. Just like Davies did well against Lennon and then Deulofeu against Everton. But people keep claiming that he's not suited to those kinds of opponents.

I think Davies crosses the ball better than Rose (at the moment at least) and is better on the ball than Rose. Rose's pace and athleticism does mean that he recovers better against counter attacks and he does get beyond full backs more often. But both offer a good threat against deep defending sides, though through different styles. Davies being in form whereas Rose isn't is more than enough to warrant starting Davies at the moment imo, also against a team like Leicester.

I agree - we would also do well to win the Europa League that has always been "not big enough competition" for most fans, although we've stumbled out before the semi-final quite a few times in a row now.

I think we could have done with Rose yesterday - their right hand side was crying out to be exploited and Davies was a little too conservative - though that may have been by instruction I guess

He was very solid defensively yesterday as usual (we can't remember Mahrez in many dangerous actions, can we?) and should have had at least one assist if Lamela could hit a shot on target.
Compare him to Walker who "exploited" his side, made several addressless crosses and nearly presented Leicester with a goal on two occasions.

He definitely played well, no arguments there - it was just annoying seeing so much space for him to run in to but him reluctant to push on in to it, I think had we stretched Leicester more we would have found better openings

Walker had a shocking game by all accounts, was sloppy and under pressure. Tbh Leicester didn't offer much going forward and had a plan to sucker punch us on the break. That was the worst I've seen him and he was not put under much pressure for the most part. Same on the left. Davies as usual put in a good solid performance but looking at the team shape, their right hand side was wide open I think we missed an opportunity to really push Danny Simpson. As I mentioned in another thread, Leicester were not brilliant last night but were allowed to do a job on us. They came to frustrate and did so allowing only one great chance and few speculative crosses whipped in from deep that created half chances for us. Did we get to the byline once, did we double up on their full backs once, were we brave in possession in the last 3rd? It was a no and thats what was very frustrating for me

Walker had a good game but did have the one brain fart as is the norm

It's incredibly hard for the full backs to get the balance between how much to commit forward

We lost ultimately because of a defensive mistake but the defence was very good IMO

The spell where they all threw in blocks in the area was brilliant and would have been worth a point on its own

1. he had one total brain fart and another very poor clearance which led to Leicester's attack when they tried to score 3 times and we got really lucky
2. what did Walker make positive in attack yesterday? I can't remember a single cross or a forward pass which provided any danger by him. Yes, he exploited space in front of him, making life more difficult for the opponent players on his wing. But still it compensated in huge defensive mistakes and awful ball delivery.

Overall a bad game by him. Defenitely one of our weakest links yesterday.
