Saido Berahino

How? he has had the full season everyone wanted him to have to "settle in" and we start this season and he is still playing ****.

Imo people are clinging onto the idea he may come good because he is a likable guy (same as soldado).

There is a player there IMO. He hasn't performed brilliantly but he is capable of doing something different. I think he is a very creative player, and I appreciate he hasn't done enough just now. I just don't think he is anywhere near as bad as people have said.

That said I'd be tempted to sell if we got a decent offer, but I don't think he is terrible at all.

Sums up my views perfectly.

Right so he has had his settling in season, fair enough. This season he has to produce, no arguments there... but we're two games in to the season, in which he's made two sub appearances - granted they were poor, just about as bad as he's ever played for us, but really is that enough to call it? Would you all be saying he's a star if he'd had turned in two good performances - or would you be saying lets see if he can sustain it?

It really does seem that a lot of people were waiting for the first sign of a bad performance just to give them the green light to slag him off, some couldn't even wait for the season to start and were at it after the Milan game

Bingo

I assume you never slagged off Paulinho? Someone who has probably played the same amount as Lamela has now and was almost half the price Lamela was? How comes he never got the backing that Lamela has? and don't come out with the crap about being tinkle poor as Lamela has been just as bad.

I certainly didn't, but realised that we got an offer that was good enough for us to let him go. If we spent half as much time supporting our players and delivering constructive criticism as we do in writing off players it would be better imho. Billy's point is a good one. A lot of people were saying this was the season for Lamela to prove himself after having a reasonable season (7 assists and 2 goals), yet 2 substitute performances is enough for people to whine and say sell him. Those very same people would probably have sold Bale to Notts Forest or whereever. And Billy's is right. If he came on and had a decent performance, people would just say that it was only 2 substitute appearances.

Now I'm not saying that he will be our Bale. I'm just saying that after the summer we have had in clearing out the dross, it doesn't look like Lamela is one of those players that the club is looking to move on. So maybe, just maybe, they believe that they will be able to get something out of him this season.

IMO Paulinho performed a lot better for Spurs than Lamela has so far.

I never slagged off Paulinho, no.

Besides, the difference there is Paulinho was what, 25/26 when we signed him - a player theoretically reaching his peak years? Lamela had just turned 21 when we signed him and has just turned 23 over the summer - 23 years old, we have had players that age who've hardly played a game for the senior team who people still have backed to improve enough.

What backing has either player had, really - both got/get far more abuse than they ever got support.

Haters have got to have some one to hate.

To much sense in that. ;)

How plausible is it that we'll be bidding 22m, when we didn't for Schneiderlin and some of the other supposed midfield and forward targets earlier in the window??

I am stunned by the support Lamela gets on here. He has been utter w@nk for 2 whole seasons. 'Barely had a game', 'not gotten a proper chance' - wtf are you smoking - he has played nearly 60 times for us. 60!!!

I understand why we have kept him as a squad option but the window is not yet up and with the impending arrival of Berahino and Pritchard coming through, there seems a decent chance he will go if the club can find the right suitor at the right price.

Saying he is just 23 really does not mean anything. Berahino is one year younger and outperformed Lamela by miles last season, albeit in a different position. Regardless - the position Lamela plays does not require a great deal of tactical discipline unlike defence/central midfield where it is not uncommon to see players come into their own at about 25-27. Attacking players show their class far earlier. Lamela has done next to nothing for us.

I'm not writing him off as a footballer. I just don't believe he will ever make it in England. Playing CAM in Italy, or even cutting in from the right, I am sure he would be a success. But it's time to let go.

I really think between Chadli, Townsend, Pritchard, N'Jie and Berahino we have more than enough wide players. And that's not to mention the fact that Poch as been experimenting with using traditionally central midfielders tucking in (see Dembele in the league, Onomah and Mason in pre-season). We are well stocked.

To bring this slightly more on topic... I am so, so excited about the versatility Berahino brings. This season, we have seen our 3 AMs behind Kane operating with far more fluidity than ever before. Berahino offers the chance to step that up a gear in a way players like Lamela simply do not. He can play left/right wing and has the pace to ACTUALLY STRETCH THE PLAY for the first time since Lennon (Townsend's running has never been intelligent enough). But more to the point, he is a both good finisher from midfield, giving us goal threats across the attack, and a natural number 9.

Chadli (while not my favourite player) has been a fantastic goal outlet for our relatively toothless attack, but his main limitation imo (defensive work aside) has been his lack of versatility. Trials with him up front have been a complete failure dating back to the AVB days. In Berahino we finally have a player who gives us the option to naturally switch to a 4-4-2 at any point during the game if we need to up the ante, and who can be withdrawn into a midfield role if we need to calm things down. Moreover he has a pre-established relationship with Kane.

I genuinely think Berahino is going to transform our attack, while from what little I've seen of him, N'Jie looks like he adds goals, pace and versatility in a similar way. If we can begin to get central midfield sorted this season (big if), we are going to hit the ground running and be a massive handful next year and I am fairly confident we can come in the top 4 regardless of how much money the big clubs spunk.

We currently have an entire team that are of the ages 20-24 bar Lloris (my only major worry in terms of players getting poached, but even he is young for a keeper). None of these players are likely to want to leave in the next 2-3 seasons, and all of them are likely to start reaching their peaks (as we start playing in the new stadium nonetheless).

It is really is an exciting time to be a Spurs fan.

We've got to sign him first mate! Plus Lloris will be off next year if we don't do anything this season. It's a vicious cycle.
