The youth players/on-loan thread 2014-2015

The pair of them will likely get a chance in the next couple of years, but I think a good loan move is what Carter-Vickers will need first, both to help his development and give us time to clear a path for him. Lets face it, we have four first team centre backs right now and Wimmer and Dier are already in the developing category. In a couple of years time we may have lost Fazio and/or Vertonghen and Veljkovic or CCV will be use to fill the void. Veljkovic may have more of a chance for us this season as he could fill in as a DM and will likely be wary of a loan after what happened at Middlesborough.

Agree, Carter-Vickers should go out on loan. I can see Veljkovic getting some EL and cup games for us this season

Tottenham youngster plays key role as Serbia wins U20 World Cup

Another World Cup title for Milos!

Serbia's U20 team scored in the 28th minute of extra time to defeat heavy favorites Brazil 2-1 in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand on Saturday. Tottenham Hotspur's young defender Milos Veljkovic started the match in central defense and went the distance, putting in a stout defensive effort to help Serbia get the victory.

This is the first time Serbia has participated in the U20 World Cup as an independent nation since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Milos was a key player for the Serbians, starting in central defense and playing every minute of every match for Veljko Paunovic's young team. Veljkovic was also a member of the Serbia team that won the 2013 U19 European Championships.

Veljkovic didn't have the best of club seasons in 2014-15. He was virtually ignored in his first loan at Middlesborough, and was injured soon after starting his second loan with Charlton Athletic. For him to recover and regain enough fitness not only to participate but start and play every single minute for the U20 World Cup champions is a fantastic achievement for the young defender. En route his Serbian team knocked off fellow Tottenham youth teamer Cameron Carter-Vickers and a USA squad that was among the favorites for the competition, as well as a highly-favored Brazil team that hadn't given up a goal in over 500 minutes of play.

Veljkovic is hoping to make an impression on Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino so that he can try and nab a roster place with Tottenham's first team. A key role for a World Cup title-winning team doesn't guarantee that, but it should be a pretty substantial feather in his cap. Who knows, this Cup followed by a good pre-season might put Veljkovic in contention for some matches in cups and Europa League group stages, or it could turn into a Premier League loan.

----------------------------------

If we are not going to buy any top quality defenders next season, want us to give a few chances to Veljkovic in defence. After helping Serbia win U-19 Euro in 2013 and now the U-20 World Cup, surely he can't be that bad !

Alli looks good, nice mover, often in the right place at the right time, simple finishes.

Let's hope he can cut it in the Prem, it will be a VERY steep step for him and Pritchard this year.

Not the official team of the tournament but good to see our lads being recognised for their quality, even if they did spell Veljkovic wrong.

Emirates Marketing Project keeping tabs on Spurs youngster Josh Onomah as part of push to sign home-grown players

The 18-year-old Tottenham prospect Onomah is the latest young English player to be targeted by the Blues

In demand: Onomah is wanted by City

Tottenham starlet Josh Onomah is the latest young English talent on Emirates Marketing Project’s radar.

City are trying to recruit young home-grown players like Raheem Sterling and Jack Wheelchair.

Premier League clubs can name no more than 17 foreign players over the age of 21 in their squads.

City's homegrown ranks have been depleted by James Milner , Frank Lampard , Dedryck Boyata and Scott Sinclair leaving.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini can plug the void if necessary by promoting some of the club’s own youngsters.

But Spurs’ rising star Onomah, 18, is on City’s radar too after they also lined up a move for Fulham youngster Patrick Roberts.

Attacking central midfielder Onomah made his senior debut last season as substitute in Spurs' FA Cup win over Burnley in January.

He also impressed as sub in both Spurs’ end of season tour games in Malaysia and Australia, which the visitors won.

Nothing to worry about as we'd never entertain any interest in him but there's a fine line between being patient with a young player and holding them back, he's a big talent and deserves to start seeing some 1st team game time sooner rather than later.

While that's undoubtedly true; it's tough to deny that - recently - we have clearly been one of the better premier league sides for developing our own youth players and giving them game time. I'd much rather be an 18 year old attacking midfielder at Spurs than an 18 year old attacking midfielder at Emirates Marketing Project.

You beat me to it lol. Emirates Marketing Project are desperate to meet their homegrown quota, but any player his age should step away from them.

Also, thought it worth mentionning that Jimmy Bullard was on Talksport talking up Alli. He said that Alli is big enough to play in the EPL already and is a powerful player. He was more praising of Alli's technical ability and likened his composure on the ball and ability to manipulate it with that of Zidane :D (did say he's a long way off that, but was trying to explain to the hosts that he's not a power player like Gerrard as he has greater technical skills).

Well if he turns out to be half as good as Gerrard I'll be dancing on air.

I think he needs to show more desire in games to be worthy of a start. He has all the talent in the World but has a bit of a tendency to coast through games (perhaps because he has so much talent). I'm not sure it sends the right signals to pick a player that does this, I want to see him putting everything in so that he earns his place in the team.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton chases loan deal for Spurs kid Harry Winks as he steps up revival at Ibrox...

I wonder if Rangers would be a good place to send loanees now that Warburton is there - 40k+ at home games (?) pressure to win promotion/the league and now a manager who gets his teams playing good football - the draw back obviously is that the overall standard of the Scottish second tier is poor, but i imagine it's an unforgiving league and will force a few of our youngsters to grow up quickly

Speaking to Australian media outlet The Leader, young goalkeeper Tom Glover has commented on training with the first-team, having earned Pochettino’s respect with youth team displays.

The 17-year-old stopper said: “They [the first-team players] give me advice. If I let a bad goal in for example, they're never putting me down. They bring me back up. They're good guys as well: no one is roostery. They're all humble and they all talk to you.

“He’s [Pochettino] seen me play. He watched me against Chelsea. I heard from the youth team manager he was really impressed.”

Glover only moved to Spurs’ academy full-time in August 2014, but became a regular fixture in the youth ranks, and travelled with the Lilywhites on their post-season tour of Malaysia and Australia.

He helped the North Londoner’s Under-18 side to the FA Youth Cup semi-final, where they lost to Chelsea, who eventually went on to win the trophy.

He is already a regular youth international for Australia, and big things are expected of him. Glover will be hoping to establish himself at Under-18 level next term, as well as starting to break into Under-21 level.

He is clearly thought of highly by Pochettino, and a solid season at youth level next term could see Glover start to break through into the Spurs first-team in the coming seasons.

Of the three youth keepers(McGee/Voss/Glover) I think it's Glover who has the best chance of "making it". Someone on here was recently saying they prefer big keepers, well this kid is a good 6'4-6'5 and probably still growing. He's very commanding aerially as you'd expect but he's also very vocal which is good to see at that age.

I think it could be a good move. I'd only make it a half season loan, though. If he does well enough, he might attract interest from a Championship club. And that would be a far higher level.
