Transfer Rumour Thread

I'm pretty surprised myself. Bassong and Nelsen will almost definitely be leaving and King and Gallas won't be able to play too many games, leaving Kaboul and Daws as the only reliable CB's.* I agree with Gutter Boy in that the management must have someone in mind to bring in. But does this mean that they don't believe Caulker is good enough or that he needs more experience because, based on what I have seen, he could do a good job. And he would get quite a lot of games thanks to the CL (hopefully).

*Is Dawson even reliable? I hope so, but his injury record this season may suggest otherwise.

Lets hope they have someone lined up. They have had 2/3 seasons to scout a long term replacement to King.

Watching Benfica against Chelsea, I couldn't help thinking Pablo Aimar looks like a perfect replacement for Modric should he insist on leaving.

Doesnt to enough defensive work really More a VDV replacement.

Probably gettable though, how old is he? Been around a while, was thought of as the next Maradona for a long time but never lived up to his billing though obviously talented.

The defensive side of it is an issue but Modric is hardly a great asset in the tackling department. Having said be noticed this part of Modrics game has improved. I just like the way Aimar always used the ball well and seemed to have time even when being pressed.

Exactly, Modric might not be a big tackler be he knows how to position himself to set up attacks quickly and plays an intelligent pressing game. Aimar I dont believe would possibly be able to do that and if he is 32 no way he would have the legs for it either, he'd be gassed by half time after getting the run around all game positionally.

I think he's the sort of player that would have been great 3/4 years ago but now we've moved on. Far better signing someone like Dembele or Marin who while slightly different players are far younger with explosive potential.

People seem to be missing the point it's not about buying 'first teamers' or 'squad players'. It's about bringing together a squad.

The very problem we have is that we have players that know they are tagged as 'squad' players, won't get in the team unless someone gets injured and aren't happy about it. See Corluka, Krancjar, Pav, Defoe, Bassong.

I concede that the 'first teamers' are better, but you need to keep the squad players hungry and give them a chance to stake their place in the team and keep them in the team if they do well.

This is where I feel Redknapp has failed this year, he's not rotated at the right times to keep the squad fresh and not wanting to leave.

It's hard to be too critical mind, given our current position. Just my opinion. Fergie is a master at this.
agree with the central theme but not so sure i agree that harry is at fault

I thought he looked terrible last night! Not to mention he plays a much more advanced role and is soon to retire. This is a joke?

I thought he looked fairly decent last night. In saying that I thought he was responsible for the Meriles goal. Poor deliver from the freekick leading up to it and then bottled out of a challenge to let Chelsea break through on goal.

He's no Modric replacement though. Closer to VDV if anyone.
