Christian Benteke

Agreed - we'll just have to park that one.

Again agreed on both counts. If our maximum risk on Benteke is £15M then it's a recoverable amount if it doesn't work out.

I like Berahino - he's my personal preference both in style and for the fact that he and Kane may be forming an England partnership.

Berahino is Darius Vassel

Poch played with a big cf whenever possible at Soton last season - and Lambert isn't exactly the most mobile and Koeman has continued this system with Pelle this season. So if you are going to play with one up front, then this type of player would seem essential to it for both Poch and Koeman.
I wasn't talking about his size. I was questioning whether his game was a good fit for Poch or at least significantly better than a few other players to justify paying a lot more for him.

I would love to see Benteke at Spurs and think he is just what we need. Defoe and then Soldado have proved that the lone little one up front for us does not work...

Three big if's here.......but IF we had kept Bale and at the same time IF we bought Baines and IF we bought Benteke we could have had a reasonable go at the league last year.. Alas, I can only dream...

I think that it is a mistake to look at the size of two players and then say that smallers players will not will work leading the line for us.

Instead, we should look at the players who are doing well in those positions at clubs who play a similar formation and tactics.

Benteke debate is interesting. Do people think he is not a good player? Or just off form? Lost it after a bad injury? Or getting no good service in a poor side?

Personally I think the last point. He is a good finisher. He is a powerful beast. Can hold the ball up. Has pace. Can link play. Would be ideal.

Off form, poor service and a massive whack of regression.

I think that he is alright but I am not convinced that he is significantly better than several cheaper alternatives.

Such as?? Pray tell us who are these cheaper - just as good - alternatives who have shown they can cut it in the Premership and are the first choice CF for a top notch European national team?

I'm not sure that there is any need to take that tone.

I was referring to Berahino and Ings. I am questioning whether Benteke is significantly better than them, better suited to our game and has better potential to justify the extra money that he would cost.

Form is temporary (except for Soldado)
Poor service - couldn;t agree more. Benteke in front of Hazard & co for the Belgian national team is not exactly ineffective, isn't he?
Regression? May be the best thing that could happen for us. No disrepect, but to mention names like Rodriguez, Aguero and Costa on a Spurs rumours thread is the pinnacle of delusion. Who is the best that we can attract? Either another "Soldado type" shot in the dark on a player who is relatively decent in a different league but can more than flop in England or else a PL proven player who is willing to come to us and is not poached by the likes of Man****ty like Bony; in effect this means the likes of Benteke or Berahino. On their best days, the former in unplayable, even against a packed defence; the latter is reasonably effective.

And the only chance we can buy him in the summer is if his current goal slump continues... Having said that, he is never anonymous in a game (as we saw against us before he got that red)

As for Benteke's ability to fit into Poch's game plan - he is Rickie Lambert to the power of ten!

What tone? It was an honest question... Why's didn;t you just mention them by name then?

Benteke vs Ings? Sorry, mate - we will need to agree to disagree... big time! Berahino also doesn't start to compare with an in-form Benteke

But then, football is a game of opinions.

I was asking the question rather than saying they were.

In what ways do you think that Benteke is better suited to our style of play than the other two?

It's posted a couple of pages back. On his day, Benteke is unplayable. He also consistently scores against the big clubs - something the likes of Defoe never managed; that is the mark of a good striker. Also have a look at him playing for Belgium - with decent midfield service - and you will see why I rave so much about him. That is potentially the Benteke who we can get.

He can be the battering ram we need for teams who defend deep but equally a mobile target man when we come up against top 4 clubs. Neither Ings nor Berahino would do that; the former is more a number 10 who scores and Berahino - as someone said - looks like a modern day Vassell, with a lot of undesirable baggage.

I agree, I'm all for Benteke to the point he should be target No1

I have seen him for Belgium but the problem with international football is that truly competitive games are few and far between.

Berahino plays nothing like Vassell. Yes Berahino has some pace, but it is not his only (or even main) attribute.

I have made no secret of wanting us to have signed Benteke however (we should've got him in 2013 instead of Soldado)

I am with you on this Maltese. I think Benteke is the best we can currently hope for. The others mentioned are too similar to the role Kane plays. As previously stated, a forward line of Benteke and Kane , supported by Chadli and Lamela/Townsend/an other, and prompted by Eriksen would have considerable potency against teams that park the bus and who we currently have most trouble breaking down.

This gives us a good blend of power, panache, aerial supremacy, speed and skill.

Go get him Danny boy.

Where is the speed?

I really don't like the idea of Kane and Benteke.

It would be like playing Sheringham with Heskey; rather than Sheringham with a Shearer/Klinsmann and Heskey with an Owen.
