Hugo Lloris

[MIXCLOUD][/MIXCLOUD]

neur is the only keeper who is better IMO

depends how youre judging a keeper. at shot stopping and running around abit he's very good. Everything else, he lacks. Could argue that poor positioning is the reason he has to dive around all over the place. I do like Lloris though, but is it a surprise he is at Spurs and no one else has even gone for him?

what makes him better then Begovic for example?

I think Lloris' kicking is poor (which I think is the reason why one of the Spanish big boys haven't been in for him before).... I think that's about it for his weaknessse though really... I don't consider his positioning to be poor at all.

...and then some combination of Courtois, Buffon, Bravo, Mandanda, Lloris, De Gea, Valdes, Navas and Oblak beneath him. It's not inconceivable that Lloris is one of the five best keepers in the world right now, especially when considering the questionable selection on offer elsewhere in that lot (Mandanda is his back-up in the national side, Navas is still raw, Oblak is a bit of an unknown quantity at the top, Valdes is unattached at present).

Cech is still top class as well - just has another top class (and young) keeper in front of him. In fact I think if Chelsea didn't think they would've lost Courtois if they didn't actually keep and play him this season, then Cech would still be Chelsea's keeper.

Agreed.

That one real weakness and most top clubs being alright for goalkeepers is what we have to rely on to keep him around I think.

I was a goalie in hockey and I play keeper in indoor soccer during the winter and as much as having to make a save is because of a positional breakdown elsewhere on the field - there is no better feeling when you pull off an absolute stunner. You'd give the defenders **** but inside you're bloody beaming.

Id be extremely surprised if none of the big boys wanted him because his kicking wasnt the best to be honest, just lucky like you say that most are well covered in that position...

His kicking is very weak and doesn't seem to be getting any better, either. In terms of shot-stopping and reaction saves, he can be very good, but then again, there have been quite a few times when I've thought he ought to have done better as well, when he's been beaten at his near-post, for example.

I think in general he relies heavily on his tactic of charging out to narrow the angles and give the attacker less time to think about his finish. If you are in one-on-one with him close to his line and you're not Adebayor or Soldado, I think you'll beat him more often than not. I'd never be especially confident he'd be likely to pull off a penalty save, for instance.

No surprise to me that the usual suspects are keeping their powder dry, waiting to see evidence of our improving him. Some hopes ...although with our defence, lack of practice will never be an excuse on that score.

I think his kicking has improved massively this season up until the Chelsea game, thats the first time I can remember it really putting us in trouble whereas last season it seemed like it was a weekly occurrence.

Spot on, Lloris hugely improved his kicking.

Every keeper in world football makes mistakes and goes through patches of form.

De Gea, Courtis, Lloris, Hart, Cech, are the best in league for me, then you have some very capable keepers in Begovic, Krul, Guzan, Vorm, etc

Its usually a lazy outfield player copping out the reason it gets passed back to Lloris to kick anyhow

I'd rather kicking was his weak spot than everything else, as was the case with Robinson towards the end.

Good post. Hugo is a worldclass GK and obviously our best player by MILES. I'd put him a slight notch down from De Gea, Courtis and Begovic in pure shot stopping terms though It's a question of fine margins, but for the same reasons as you outline I think he's not quite as great a pure shot stopper as the above 3 keepers. That's not even a criticismm, however, as he's still a really good shot stopper!

But what is important, however... well, all PL keepers are good shot stoppers as a minimuml what seperates Lloris and the others from the rest is their all round game as a GK. And Hugo's all round game is as good as anyone in the league IMO. His ability to come off his line in sweeper fashion, command his box, make big saves at key times, deal with corners in exemplary fashion, talk to his defenders, etc is absolutely amazing.

His kicking is his only real weak point as a GK, but it's not terrible, and I also agree with those who say it's getting better.

Hugo's ability to get off his line at rapid pace is what allows us to play the high line we've seen recently (albeit still with a slightly makeshift defence).

Selling him doesn't just lose us a world class keeper, but it disables the sheer backbone of the way Poch wants us to play. Vorm and Begovic (for want of a realistic replacement) are both very good keepers, but I don't think offer the same kind of game that Lloris has.

Great shot stopper he is but I don't think he will be considered a great goalkeeper. I'd put him down further than a notch down from those three keepers mentioned AND chech. Too many wayward kicks, flapping and suspect at the far post (e.g liverpool Moreno goal ) for my liking. But he suits Poch's system so I'm all for him at the moment. But I won't be surprised if we cashed in on him to make Vorm our #1 to beef up in other areas.

My top 5 would be:

1. Courtois
2. Neuer
3. Lloris
4. Ter Stegen
5. Buffon
