Etienne Capoue

I watched Capoue a fair bit during yesterdays game and one thing I noticed is he takes an age to react to a change of direction in play, he's like a tanker at turning and really never busts a gut to recover once the play is past him. His lack of mobility and desire is for me one of the main reasons our defence gets little cover on the break.

We definetly need someone more mobile in that defensive role, Stambouli might not have the passing range that Coupe possesses but from what I've seen he can give our backline better protection.

What? - Stambouli is arguably our best passer in central midfield. Mason probably edges him.

I'd +1 this also.

The guy seems to mentally react slower too, like he's waiting to see if he really is going to have to run back. Eriksen's yellow was one for me where he backed off at a time when he could've taken command of the situation after Eriksen had originally unsettled the ball carrier.

I guess you are talking about his time in France as he has hardly played for us. His short/mid range passing against Brighton was good though nothing more than Dembele did in the same match. I would go as far to say that Dembele and Stambouli's game dovetails quiet well and should be considered our starting pair against the big boys. They look very stable and certainly more defensively sound than Capoue and Mason.

Capoue is a decent passer of the ball, very good actually, and he sees the pass early which is also good. Defensively he is not brilliant and neither is Mason to be fair so while both add something on the transition they don't add a lot of cover for the defenders behind them IMO.

Almost definitely. It's the closest we have to Sandro/Dembele which was very very good.

But the stats say he is fooking superb, what with his over 18 yard passes. Tbf to the bloke the entire spine of Kaboul, Capoue and Ade are simply not up to much. The first 2 are playing as I expect but Ade could offer so much more.

This... Our spine with the exception of Hugo is dross. Would try Dyer at CB with Vertongen, Stambouli as a pure defensive CM with Mason and Eriksen buzzing around him and then Lamella, Chadli and Kane way up as a front 3.

Hmmm, Ive got not problem with making a case for Stambouli being tried out at Capoue's expense. But I dont think you can make a case for Stambouli's passing being better than Capoue's. In less games than Capoue I dont think his passing has been as good, and Capoue has been playing in the faster and more competitive matches....

Whilst I don't overly rate capoue - I think he has had some very good games for us but struggles against mobility.

Murmon - how you can go so big on Strombouli this early is puzzling. He played pretty good against Brighton but overall he has been underwhelming. In Europa he has been hit and miss and he has been sloppy in possession.

..... I am all for giving him a go as our holding player over capoue but to be calling him our best midfielder is completely premature and foolish IMO.

Capoue was playing well a couple weeks ago and MOTM in some games. He's had a couple of off games, like most of our midfielders have/do, and so assume he will be given similar latitude to them.

Yeah this is true - obviously there were a few posters still unsure about him but generally id say there was a good feeling about him, both on here and from the press as well. A few disjointed/poor performances later and he's suddenly back to being written off.

As long as we're giving the manager time to get things sorted we need to be doing the same for players - will take time for some to get to grips with what the manager wants from them and central midfield as tough as any position on the pitch

Agreed. Some are treating Capoue as if he was Zokora on his way out the door when he actually has only 18 PL starts for us under 3 different managers.

Personally I like the look of Stambouli and think he deserves a start in the PL pretty soon, but I would expect Capoue to put up a fight for a starting spot.

Are we all now nicely agreed that Capoue is absolute dog****? Or are there still a few hardy souls that are impressed with his 'pass completion stats'?

He looked alright against the goons away, when the team played in a compact style. Poch needs to get back to that method of playing, shore things up and build a bit of confidence in these players, a bit of resilience.

not me i think he is a pretty good player, not becasue of pass completion stats but in making the team tick over - not saying he is our new modric but he is the best option we have right now, and he plays that role much better than bentaleb, who may have equal pass completion stats but less presence in the centre of the pitch.

And I don't think he is being helped by the amount of pitch he has to cover.

I think it's time to give Stambouli a try for some games. e at least has more pace to get about the pitch from what I've seen.

Perhaps move Mason further forward and play Capoue alongside Stambouli?
