I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

great goal of course but you have to take it in context, against some hapless cypriot league 1 equivalent outfit doesnt command the respect of say scoring it against chelsea

To be fair to Lamela, you could also say re the context that it was against a team who topped the group at the start of the evening, above both us and Beskitas. Both of whom are decent European teams. Indeed we are are currently ranked 16th in Europe.

So not really a great goal if you take it in context then.

Because the technique and skill required to execute such a maneouvre varies according to the opposition?

is that a serious question?

Zlatan "i'm not going to watch the world cup if I'm not playing" Ibramovich has made a career out of scoring blinders against crap teams but finding little against the european elite teams

He needs Walker behind him BADLY. I'm a little disappointed with Poch in the sense that Lamela coming in means we are narrow when the likes of Naughton/Dier are behind him. As we have no Walker and no Yedlin at the moment, Lamela needs to be playing centrally. Him playing off Soldado with Eriksen on the left and Chadli on the right would be our best front four.

Tbh I think he needs to be dropped. Patience is wearing thin, you can't keep playin someone who keeps losing the ball when trying to over complicate. Was atrocious today and you can't blame anyone other than him.

I have defended him to the hilt and have been praying that his glimpses of quality were a sign of things to build on but I have been so frustrated last few weeks

He needs support, double marked and no one making a showing for the ball. Everyone scream in fit him to release the ball, to who? There's seldom anyone there. He is isolated, wants to cut inside to play a pass and there's no one there.

Agreed. He's a forward thinking player, he could quite easily return the pass back to where it came from but he'd probably get abused for not moving with the ball, like Lennon was. He cuts in to try make things happen and EVERYONE is static. This has been the same under three managers and the players don't learn.

Whatever he had when playing for other team hasn't translated to the Premiership. I think he likes to get on a run and jink past players, and he is not going to get the opportunity against most teams in this division, and he is playing too high up the pitch to do that anyway. He reminds me of the kid in the playground who has got all the tricks, but can't translate it to a game.

With our squad as it is fro the foreseeable future, I can't see where he is going to fit in. And we can't afford to carry any players. He doesn't work as wide player. He's not a #10 judging on performances so far. I can't see him getting a game in CM in a 4-4-2 and he is not a DM in a 4-2-3-1. Possibly a second striker in 4-4-2, but I can't see Poch ever doing that. So we would be better off selling him and using the funds to buy players we do need.

There is no question he has talent. But he needs to find a team and league that work for him. He wouldn't be the first player that didn't suit the Premiership.

this, if there's little/**** movement around and no width as an option also, there's not really alot he can do.

I may be being harsh here but he was SO ****e today (not the only one mind you). I just dont see it. He continuously loses the ball, holds on to it for far too long, misplaced and wayward passes, doesnt score many, doesnt really create, poor corners... am I seriously missing something here with this guy?

I am sure he is a very good player but I just cant see him cutting it in this league unfortunately.

We keep trying to be oh so clever with out signings. Why don't we just sign some players with very obvious strengths?

Centre-halves with athleticism and heading ability. Midfielders who can tackle and pass. Wide men and forwards with blistering pace.

We sign players who are ok technically but not outstanding, who can run a bit, but not that fast, who are sort of athletic, but not that imposing...just look at Vertonghen, this is a typical Spurs signing the past couple of years. He can head it a bit, but isn't great in the air. So he's supposed to sweep up, but isn't that quick. Not really a natural defender (stopper) but doesn't do much going forward either. Why sign players of this type, what are we trying to achieve?

He needs to either play off the left or centre. I'd play him off the left; at the very least you'd get quality delivery/passing back across the area/into channels/around the back of defenders. The inverted experiment with him isn't working IMO…he's being hung out for dry there...

central.

left wouldnt work with pochs plans. with dier/naughton at right back, chadli on the right would be fine. Eriksen on the left.

Indeed. Which is why I think I'd like him to at least be on the side he can naturally feel the most comfort on the ball…his first touch can be forwards not a check back around/inside where he does inevitably find a wall or no-one moving. Either that or, as you've suggested, just let him sit where Eriksen is. I'd seriously think of resting Eriksen for a bit personally...

There in lies the question…I think Poch needs a plan B, a really solid and different one. This league can be unforgiving if you don't...
