Playing a different formation today. 4-1-4-1, with Bentaleb sitting in front of the defence, Paulinho and Holtby in more advanced central midfield roles, Townsend on the right and Kane on the left. We started quite well, controlled everything in the first 10-15 minutes or so, and should have scored when Kane and Soldado had a double chance. Then we gave them a goal, and after that they gained confidence, and we have been rubbish.

Our defence is too easily split open by through balls, especially in the space between Davies and Vertonghen. On one occassion, Dier also dropped deeper than the rest of the defence on the other side to play the Cypriot onside.

I thought Bentaleb started the game very well and passed the ball around well from his deep midfield role. Less dominant later on in the half, though. Holtby and Paulinho can't seem to find their positions, and have done nothing at all of a positive note.

Townsend keeps running down blind alleys as usual on the right. If he plays, it has to be on the left for me. At least he can then run down the line and put some crosses in. Kane has been very positive. Good at finding space to recieve the ball, picks the right passes and even had a couple of good runs on the ball. At the end of one of them he was hacked down at the edge of the box, but the referee incredibly didn't give a free kick. He's been our best player, though.

Soldado has struggled, but is also often isolated in this formation.

New formation my ****. paulinho just isn't disciplined to stay in midfield. He's doing what he always does and spend half the game bombing forward leaving huge gaps behind him.

Two strikers and Holtby AWOL.
You have to play a breaker holding mid.
Sandro needed.

And what are the merits of inverted wingers, surely Townsend can wells the ball with his right foot cutting in from the left and if he goes on the outside we might get a decent ball which Soldado and Kane can attack?

No defensive midfielder protecting our back 4, so sure are defence looks rubbish. You play Capoue or your play Sandro or you get a fecking replacement

**** stream **** match.

It would be nice if we could just once turn up and comfortably win a game we are expected to.

Poor performance. Only player who looked decent was Kane who really is starting to look like a player. Went on a nice dribble as well which i didn't know he had in him. I'm really starting to dislike the fact we have so much possession in games and literally do nothing with it. We've seen that so many times in the past couple of years.

Hopefully Poch gives them a kicking at halftime.

*Toys out of pram moment* :)

They are excellent at parking the bus (ie. the two banks of five that we're incapable of working our way through) and we're **** at dealing with counter attacks (don't mind me, have a run at goal) .

Aye, its frustrating. A lot of teams play this way against us. I'm amazed after the last few years we are no further forward with being able to overcome it. Still with the amount of change we've had i guess its no surprise.

The best teams deal with it by having the best players. It is a bit harder when you have to live off the crumbs off the table

They are well organised to be fair. I think we need someone to beat a man and draw another player out of their shape.

Edit: I'd flip Townsend to the other wing to see if he has any joy there.
