Jay Rodriguez

From my view their both potentially cheaper, and are genuine wide forwards/wingers rather than a centre forward playing wide. Neither I'm aware of has had a major injury problem so would be available to play now and both would have some potential resale value whereas I believe Rodruiguez is possibly at the top of his bracket (may be wrong there)

Rodriguez scored plenty of goals last season and deserves credit and if happily take hi to be fair but hopefully my answers above highlight why the alternatives may (I emphasise may ) be better

The injury is definitely a valid point and would be a concern for me too but he's just scored 15 goals playing as a wide forward in this league, how many other wide forwards around Europe's top five leagues have notched 15+?(none were penalties either). It just seems that because he's English he gets overlooked, surely if he overcomes his injury fine then he's the perfect fit? Manager already knows him, he's already proven it in this league, he's still young, good build, versatile etc. We need more goals and he offers it, the other two players I mentioned would be no more than speculative punts at this stage, I do like Konoplyanka but I do have this nagging voice telling me he just wouldn't work in the PL, does he have the substance to go with the style? Depay I can't comment on as I only watched him briefly at the WC.

Make no mistake I'd welcome him with open arms but was just responding to why we could consider others too. Rodriguez seems to have developed his game and for me was going to te World Cup for what'l that's worth

Koplichenko could easily flop based on the way other Russian federation players have failed here but again he could be mustard for us....

Depay I've never seen until the World Cup so I can't comment on too club but he is a viable alternative

I do think we have to buy someone long term or not at all though as we will lose one of the existing players with a new signing (Chadli/Townsend or Lennon or maybe two of them at least) and it has to be an upgrade

On the basis of preseason thus far, it would be madness to get rid of Lennon now.

Looks to be a player reborn in the new role Poch has given him. Showing that he is far more than a mere speed merchant. Still only 27 so, in theory at least, at his peak. Plenty of years left in him and maybe the best of them yet to come.

Again being honest I haven't seen much of pre season and I'll happily keep anyone who adapts and works with the new man and his approach and system

It's easy to go out any buy players and use that as an excuse or opportunity for success/failure

Working with what you have takes a real coach and also needs players investing in that coach. It's rare to get anyone stay at club long enough to merit that now but let's hope it will work for us now and we can see players develop to the maximum of their ability

I can deal with losing when we have out the work in.... I hate it when we haven't

I don't think depay is any better than what we have, personally I'd be going with Lennon right and lamela left, chadli and Townsend backup

if we had to sign one it would be the Ukrainian

I can see him taking the best part of the forthcoming season to get back to anywhere his best. That knee injury and his race to comeback quickly, spells follow up injury disaster to me.

Nothing to do with the fact we need some more English players, Premier League experiened players, and players the manager wants to work with, then?

He'll likely lose 5-10% of his pace because of the ACL reconstruction too.

he wasnt blisteringly quick anyway........also, Van Nistlerooy did his ACL at PSV just before he was about to sign for UTd. Once he recovered, he immediately signed for them and there was hardly any difference in his speed from before the injury to after

RVN adapted to become a slightly different type of forward. The same happened with Shearer much more so.

Losing some of his pace might actually be the thing that converts Rodriguez from a wide forward to more of an all-round CF, if he has the footballing brain to make the transition.

So we are going for Rodriguez because he had 1 good season?

If we're signing him I'm guessing it's because Pochettino rates him very highly. Considering that Poch has worked with Rodriguez for a season and a half I'm not sure what more you could possibly ask for in terms of knowledge about our targets.

Indeed, we are the intermediary between the average clubs and the world elite. We take on up and coming potential and if they turn out to be genuine top class they go on to the big boys. If players are already established top class players we have next to no chance of getting them, the only one I can think of is Lloris and thats because none of Europe's elite needed a no.1 at the time....

Exactly, I've been very unimpressed with who we have been linked with so far.

Is everybody really tied into a bigger club on a bigger salary and playing in the champions league?

Make a list of every player who got 15 league goals froma wide position in one of Europe's top leagues last season, there shouldn't be many. Now take out those who already play for CL clubs and who are you left with?

Exactly. Who do people think we are entitled to sign? Players that have been doing the business year in, year out, in the top leagues, are going to either play for bigger and richer clubs, or be coveted by them. We have to take a certain amount of risks that those clubs aren't prepared to take -- in some cases, it means we get Carrick, Berbatov, Modric, Bale. In others, we get David Bentley, but you can't win them all.
