Morgan Schneiderlin

What effective passers do in central/deep midfield is rarely visible on youtube highlights unless particularly made to showcase those abilities. It's a bit like highlights for defenders showing headed goals along with the occasional high profile block or last ditch tackle.

this is a pretty decent allround vid for Capoue, and definitely highlights his passing from midfield.

if he wants to move why doesnt he just hand in the transfer request? what, he wants a pay-off and a move? cheeky

It's funny that when one of our players tries to 'force a move' they are low-life scum who don't deserve to wear the shirt but when another clubs player does it and we are the buying team it's fine.

If we sign him and in two years time he forces a move to Madrid I assume most will be fine with that because it was OK for him to do it to get to WHL?

*Disclaimer, I honestly don't care that he's pushing for the move. Just playing Devil's advocate.

Completely different circumstances. As I wrote in an earlier post:

I wouldn't normally sympathise with a player acting up in order to secure a transfer away from his club but, in this instance, I can absolutely understand why Schneiderlin is doing exactly that.

It's the club that has betrayed him rather than vice versa. They no longer have a super ambitious owner. Their visionary chairman was forced out. Their manager has gone. Five of their best players have been allowed to leave. The heart has been ripped out of the club.

So it seems harsh to expect such a loyal player who has given so much ((231 games for the club over six years) to hold the fort and be denied a move while others - most of whom gave far less - were allowed to move on to bigger clubs.

If that categorical statement by the Southampton chairman was just "a negotiating tactic" then it was a spectacularly bad one. It may save him a few million in loyalty bonuses, but the damage it will do to his reputation and authority within the club and with the fans (which is already at a low ebb) will be huge.

I believe he honestly intends to keep both players. That doesn't mean he'll succeed of course. As we ourselves know from bitter experience, if a player forces a move it can be tough to hold on to him. But people blithely assuming that Schneiderlin will be a Spurs player soon might be in for a bit of a surprise. Hope I'm wrong, but I'm not optimistic about this one.

Soton's boardroom is a mess. The mouth and the brain aren't necessarily connected.

Did you rate Carrick in 2005/6?

Schneiderlin is the same but potentially quite a bit better.

I rated Carrick long before we signed him, there was no doubt about his quality as early as 2003/4 when he was West Ham's best player coming back up.

I guess I saw Southampton play 6 or 7 times last season, I can't say Schneiderlin left a lasting impression on me.

I just have this nagging doubt, I remember thinking much the same this time last year about Paulinho.

Depends. I'm only speculating, but I think there's a real chance that the Southampton chairman has been brought in as a "transition guy" to take charge during a short-ish period where the owners tries to maximize the amount of money they can get out of the club and that he doesn't really care about his long term reputation and authority.

But, and I emphasize this, only speculating here and no real evidence to support this other than the utter weirdness of his statement and the current situation at Southampton.

the southampton chairman is an ice hockey guy isnt he? listening to him on the radio he just sounds way out of his depth

My thoughts exactly, heard the interview live and he was very unimpressive. Would be very worried if I was a Southampton fan as he also admitted to not being fully
briefed on one of the transfers and why it had been given the go ahead!

scheniderlin's twitter post was the burning of the bridge. no turning back now. question is are we the only ones after him?

This all has the horrible feeling that he won't leave Soton this window and then in January he'll either go to United or PSG or come to us at which point we'll be 14th and out of the race for euro footy the following season! As someone said, our transfer deals always turn into sagas! We're like a girl always attracted to 'wrong 'uns'.

We're not the only ones after him but we're in pole position because of Schneiderlin's man love for Poch.

Probably this. Don't forget Chelski just sold Lukaku - they now need three more players to fill the vacant loanee spot.

I agree about Capoue, and that looks more like the Capoue that impressed me at least up until his injury at the start of last season. He was a bit shambolic after that, but there were some circumstances out of his control. I'm happy to see him back playing more like he did at the start of last season in some of the pre-season games. Could be a very useful player for us this season, and he's a player I think could fit in very well under Poch.

Part of my point about deep playmakers is the consistency they have to play with though. The majority of passes played by Modric, Xavi, Pirlo etc are passes just about ever top league professional footballer is capable of - thus putting that in a compilation says very little about the ability of a player. Playing those passes consistently, finding space to receive passes consistently, choosing the right time to play it quickly forward and choosing when to slow down play, all of those are very difficult to showcase in a highlight video.
