The new, new manager thread - Pt 3

People writing off Poch already, goodness gracicous me this place never fails to amaze me.

How about we give him 12 months. What actually surprises me is that people are saying this is like AVB all over again, but I don't see how? AVB came to the Premier League having just won a treble and winning the league unbeaten, went to Chelsea where he tried implementing his own system, failed and got sacked and then found his way to Spurs where he seems to fail to implement a proper successful system in over 12 months in charge. Pochettino came to England after a less than successful period in Spain, implemented his system within a few months at Southampton, improved players he already had in the team, made four of his stars England internationals and had Southampton playing some of the best football in the Premier League as well as getting plaudits from almost everyone in football.

Lets give Pochettino 12 months, if in 12 months time, we see the same old ****, the ****e defending and mistakes we have seen for over a year now, the same slow starts, the surrendering against the bigger teams one we go a goal down etc. then fair enough, it's clear that someone isn't allowing managers to do their jobs correctly, or the players just arent up for it, maybe the manager isn't up for it. But if after 12 months, Pochettino has clearly installed a philosophy into our side, we see a better pressing game, some nice crisp passing but for whatever reason it's not FULLY coming through, I'd be happy personally. It could be that the players aren't up to the job and he needs his own in, or he just needs a bit more time.

It's about time we get a manager in now, and stick with them. None of this revolving door ****. Levy needs to BELIEVE that Poch is the right man for the job and if he is, then stick with him forever how long his contract runs for.

Great post. When you lay out what Poch has done at Southampton like that, it makes him more attractive.

As the article above states, we've always passed in the past on the 'up and coming' premiership manager like Rodgers and Martinez. Lets not miss out on another one.

That being said, I'd be happy with FDB too.

Whoever it is, we as fans need to lower our expectations (as do the club). We are no longer the 'best of the rest' and although we should be challenging for a top 4 spot, but we should not be looking to get rid of our manager if it doesn't happen.

Very good post. Although I still think summarizing Poch's time at Espanyol as "less than successful" is a bit harsh.

Er, so who is the right man for Spurs? There's a chance of any appointment going wrong. For me, Pochettino is the realistic candidate with the least amount of worries about it going wrong given his proven Premier League credentials, professionalism, proven ability to work within a tight budget and within a director of football structure, get along with board members even with difficult owners, proven ability to manage and improve young English talent and mix with key foreign signings, proven ability to construct stylish teams and successfully port these ideas across different clubs and leagues.

Who would be your choice? The one that is not going to be AVB all over again?

Another very good post.

I would add another question in a similar vein: What are the actual similarities between AVB and Poch that are worrying people?

I can't help shake the feeling of deja vu with the now probable appoinment of Poch, if it does happen. Based on nothing more than gut instinct I think FdB would be a better appointment and fit for Spurs. The Ajax style is one that I would love to see Spurs attempt to play.

I can almost see the thread titles this time next year about how we backed the wrong horse again. Spurs has done this to me!!!

Pretty much my thinking as well :(

Lets hope we are wrong if its poch and he does a fantastic job and if we are giving fdb the swerve there is a bloody good reason.

Onwards and upwards
Coys.

I think the fans need to lower the expectations. I don't think AVB or Redknapp lost their jobs because they didn't get top 4. In fact, Redknapp lost his job having achieved precisely that.

Redknapp went due to philosophy and personality clashes as well as a failure to arrest a performance issue with the team in the 2nd half of seasons, plus I think a desire to return to a DOF structure which Redknapp didn't want to work under.

AVB lost his job because of personality clashes as well as a failure to demonstrate improvement in performances.

I think as Mumorn says, even if Pochettino doesn't get top 4, or even finishes in a similar position to this season, BUT shows definite advances in team performance, style of play, defensive solidity etc then I think he'll keep his job.

Agree that he has a lot of potential, but I think Southampton will be desperate to keep him. They will probably lose 2-3 first team players to the big clubs, but Ward-Prowse might not interest the top clubs at this point.

The sales they're likely to make will put them in a stronger financial position and selling more players, particularly someone as talented as him, will be another big blow for them when they will be looking for any stability they can find.

True. But selling him may mean that they are in a stronger position to keep one or two of their bigger names who probably aren't yet beating down the doors to demand a move.

It's ridiculous to say he's AVB all over again. It's about as stupid as the Sunderland fans saying they didn't want Poyet as it would be Di Canio all over again. They are young and foreign, that's pretty much were the similarities end.

I'm pretty sure there were a few who didn't want AVB for precisely those reasons.

Poch did not take over a struggling Southampton side he was only installed due to a change in chairman/ownership . He's had a squad of extremely talented young English players who seem to have a good desire. Most of which are being linked with top sides. Adkins was doing just fine there so it's not like he turned a shower of ****e into a top half team.

We have different expectations at spurs than on the south coast not just the fans but the board and players too.

As you say any manager would be a gamble of course that's the case but if we're going to gamble I would rather see FDB installed Ajax play some good football bring through some talented youth aswell ok poch has prem experience but if were gambling might aswell go all in !

As for passing up on up and coming managers as someone posted I don't think that was the case they passed on us ..

I feel a lot more secure with Pochettino than i do with Frank De Boer, mr untested

Is he going to work well with our DoF? he seems a spirited character

Id like to know the answer to this as well.

I think some people are just scared of a manager who is desdribed as having a 'system'

Southampton had just got promoted so by definition they weren't struggling ANY Premier League performance would have been acceptable.

He didn't take over a struggling side in that respect but it's remarkable hindsight to say he had a squad full of quality players. Other than Shaw none of them were seen as future internationals its audacious that people continue to peddle this line that these players were top class players so taking Saints to 8th and their record ever finish was the minimum expectation with that squad.

Lallana is 26, Lambert 32, Rodriguez 24, if they are so brilliant have they been hiding under a rock for the past few years? Or has Pochettino developed and improved them?

He's taken Southampton from a team on the up newly promoted and hoping to stay in the Prem to top 8 team who could realistically have had 4 players going to the WC with England based on their performances under Poch.

He wouldn't be taking over a struggling Spurs side either, we finished 6th just a couple of points behind our record ever total. Most of the tools are ripe for work we just need him to do what he did at saints- maximise what he has at his disposal

FdB would come with a system too, right? I think most on here would be happy with either of the two front runners but do have a preference for one of them. Neither candidate will divide opinion as strongly as say Sherwood did, so whomever the new man is has to be a positive step in unifying the club (for now anyway;))

I disagree. Poch is making a grave mistake coming to us. He better of staying with the Saints where he can flourish. With Levy it's top 4 or here's your P45.

no one can tell you what system de boers though..aside from the usual statement which is fast becoming a cliche.....i.e 433 and presses everywhere

i think that would only be the case if Levy is looking for an angle to let someone go. AVB didnt get top 4 and he still had his job...and then he deteriorated the season after so he had to go....not to mention his problems and deficiencies followed him across London

From what we can see with our own eyes i think pochettino can at the very least duplicate the level wew just finished at.....after that is a minor mystery but i have a good feeling about this

I also feel that he would be the best candidate to get the best out of lamela

Unfortunately it's the same old problems:

When I were a lad playing under 13s we just put our best 11 on the pitch and our manager told us to run about a bit. If it worked for us why not Spurs?

And:

English football's different. It's got more guts and passion. There's no way a foreigner could ever understand that. Buy British! (even if it's ****).

Sometimes with a bit of:

He used words I don't understand. I don't trust him.
