Bob Crowe - DEAD

General secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport union Bob Crow has died aged 52

In a statement on its website, the union said he died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, with whom he clashed over plans for the Tube, said: "I am shocked. Bob Crow was a fighter and a man of character."

Mr Crow was elected general secretary of the RMT in 2002 following the death of former leader Jimmy Knapp.

The BBC's political editor Nick Robinson said Mr Crow "was, some argue, the most successful union leader in terms of securing jobs and pay for his members".

Only a day before his death, he told BBC Radio 4's PM programme that MPs deserved a pay rise.

'Sad day'

Mr Johnson said in a statement: "Whatever our political differences, and there were many, this is tragic news."

"Bob fought tirelessly for his beliefs and for his members.

"There can be absolutely no doubt that he played a big part in the success of the Tube, and he shared my goal to make transport in London an even greater success.

"It's a sad day."

Former mayor Ken Livingstone told Sky News: "Young people will learn lessons from him and realise he stood up for his members."

He added: "He was great company."

Did not like the guy or his politics but I like the fact that someone actually has an opinion and sticks to his or her beliefs. His politics was not my cup of tea much like Thatchers were not suited to everyone. But I respect that he did the best for his members.

Like Farage we need more people with true beliefs who do not tow the line and are not afraid to see the truth as they see it, Crowe fitted into that category and the fact that he never compromised his beliefs I can respect.

RIP.

RIP Bob. One of the few left that stood up for the working person and did not allow their living standards to be pushed back. RIP fella, history will be kind to you.

RIP

It's good to see that the general consensus so far is that he was a man who was willing to fight and protest for others. I am not ashamed to admit I have cursed his name a few times on a Monday morning getting on the tube! I agree with you Paxton, I feel history will be kind to him.

History will recall he lived in a council house whilst having a very nice salery from the union whos members where struggling to get housing.

If he lived in Belgravia you'd accuse him of being a champayne socialist or being on the take. Clearly he tried to set the right example by not leading an oestentatious lifestyle.

His members set his wage. Plus since when has it been that council houses are only for the poor ?

Though he did nothing wrong I do think the law should change so that council houses are for the most needy and not people who can afford to buy or privately rent. His stance on that was slightly hypercritical keeping him in line with the tory and labour MP's who to gain the popular vote say that mass immigration has had a negative impact on the working class wage, then employ someone from eastern europe.

Though I would be described as a critic of his and his views I had no problems with him taking a holiday to Brazil, he earnt a good wage it was his right to do what he wants with it and maybe that was his dream holiday, mine would be to Japan.

It wasnt his house, it was his partners!

I do not know because since leaving the parental home I have never lived in a council home. But on filling in tax returns and council tax forms etc there is often a bit asking how much your husband/wife/life partner earns. If you are living someone on a high wage then I believe in some instances your are not entitled to the benefits that other people are.

If he gave the home as his prime residence then I am of the believe that his partner should not have been entitled to live there as someone in the household would have been earning over the threshold of what I think someone living in a council home can expect to earn.

To say again I do not believe he did anything wrong but council homes are there to protect people on low incomes. I grew up in one myself in Wood Green, they are nothing to be ashamed of but I do feel the law should change so that they are for only the lowest paid. Just like the law should change and people retiring to Spain should not get winter fuel payments.

RIP.

As one of his members, I was never a fan of his style and that is due to the fact that my politics are from the opposite end of the spectrum and his needless, at times, jumping in feet first to disputes. However, it wasn't always his doing and he did always work very hard behind the scenes to get deals in place to prevent industrial action. He did manage to keep TfL in check with some scandalous ideas and probably made my work a little bit more secure and better paid as a result.

Are you one of those that continally holds the UK economy to ransom around T & C's as a tube driver then ???

If this thread is anything to go by, history will be overly kind.

Well, that certainly happened in the case of Thatcher didn't it...

Why because her actions were proved right?:p

The are plenty on the right like myself who would be critical of Crowe's policies and if you asked me what I think would be a good wage for a tube driver or whether the tubes should go to automated then I would be a very different opinions to Crowe's.

What I think his death shows is the difference in class and maturity between the left and the right. When a main stay of left wing politics dies those on the right can show compassion and respect to his achievements even if not agreeing with his views. The same can not be said when someone on the right dies and how the
left behave afterwards only in my mind seeks to further alienate them from the main stream.

What did he die of? He always looked like an overweight overstressed kind of guy, ready to bust a blood vessel at any moment

Have to say I agree fully with this. I had plenty of arguments in my workplace as people actually celebrated Thatcher dying which I thought was scandalous. I wouldn't celebrate Bob Crow dying even though I was very much opposed to how he carried out alot of his work albeit on my behalf indirectly.
