Roberto Soldado

Re: Official - Soldado

Sorry but I'm not including goals against Humpledink Spartans to make him look better. I deal in League goals, 5 in 20, 1 from open play, absolutely brutal return. He's actually hurting the team, Chadli and Capoue aren't hurting us sitting on the bench - ultimately neither of those will have much of a future at WHL I doubt but at least we won't be losing much on them.

So they've done nothing and you are still giving them a higher score? Soldado has won us points. I would also add that his link up play has been very good. As for the Europa league goals well it is the only tournament we can actually win this season so I would say his goals in it were pretty important. Clearly he has to do better but he has not been the worse of our signings by any means.

I would say he's lost us points, if Adebayor had been playing instead we'd have a higher total than we currently have. He's a £26m striker with the goal return of someone you'd expect to pay a couple of million for. His goals in the Europa aren't important, he just happened to be in the team, when he wasn't it was Defoe banging them in, poor opposition and they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. I would expect Harry Kane to get more than one open play goal if he was given a run of 20 games.

I think these for me are spot on.

I'm all for supporting our players, and I think we need to be behind him when he's in the team. But you'd have to be nuts to justify his consistently poor performances this season, and that's even before the expectations that come with signing him at 26 million.

Re: Official - Soldado

I'm afraid that strikers can be hit and miss when they go to a new club, just look at Torres, dzeko, Andy Carroll. Teams are lucky if they get a striker who hits the ground running. Personally I don't think AVB's system helped him settle in and you are probably being harsh counting many of those games where he was so clearly isolated and the whole team was struggling offensive wise.

Re: Official - Soldado

I loved Pav the person, I thought Pav the player was largely hit and miss ... better than just being miss though. At least Pav could self create a little and bang in a goal out of nothing, Soldado has a better touch and feel for the ball but he needs spoon feeding.

This is a good point, Pav with his obvious downfalls could just do something from nowhere; I was there for his volley away against Bolton a few seasons ago. Soldado has at times looked like a capable player, but there's not really been that many sparks of genius from him that make me think he's got something special about him. There's still time for him to come good obviously, but it's definitely not good as planned so far.

I see where you're coming from, but he could have at least shown some desire to succeed. His Spurs career has been summed up with his complete indifference, lack of effort and moaning.

If things are going badly, you work harder, you don't give up.

Re: Official - Soldado

People have such short memories. For the last season with us Pav was godawful. No strength, pulling out of challenges and basically looked like he couldn't be arsed.

Completely agree. Pav was awful his last season, and people saying how he was good etc. have shorter memories as they were probably the first wanting him to leave the club! Give him time to settle for GHod sake, i still think he'll come good.

Re: Official - Soldado

i actually dont think his link up play is that , what i think he can do is connect the dots very well when he has time given to him and he is in the mix of things. but overall i wouldnt rate his link up play as very good

one thing is for sure though, the pace of the league is too much for him as a LONE striker...not to mention the physicality. having another up there with him increases his usefulness in having goal scoring opportunities...the only problem is that his confidence is so shot to pieces due to AVB and his tactics that its now a case of working it back into his game

the thing is that in order to work his confidence back, he is actually doing the right thing....i.e
keeping things simple
connect the dots during build up
his the target when you have the chance to

all thats left now is patience and composure and it will come

but this dude is not scoring bucket loads this season. no way

Yeah, to be a good hold up player and link up man you have to be constantly involved. Like Adebayor when he's on form or Berbatov, Kaboute, etc. Soldado does have moments of great skill and hold up play but he never dominates a match with them. They come twice a game if we're lucky.

Re: Official - Soldado

The major problem has been that his movement is actually too quick for the style of play we have been deploying. His early movement has often been excellent but it needs quick service. Or fast wide play.

But alas, not happening, so unfortunately, the burden on him to adapt a bit becomes greater and greater. What's sad is he IS getting into scoring opportunities, he's just not putting away chances we'd expect a player of his calibre to put away. It's a pysch battle now, and I can only hope they have someone in there framing him to think in the tone cold moment and to think in the immediate present and no further. Furthermore, someone to remind him that his instinctual touches/finishes are the ones he has to employ. He's starting to hesitate ever so slightly and it's killing him. Perhaps my greatest fear here is that Ferdinand is the striker coach/asst coach. He has done nothing for our strikers whatsoever so far as I can see.

Re: Official - Soldado

For a 28 year old who came to our club with a reputation for being one of La Liga' deadliest finishers, I was hoping that Soldado would be able to contribute more than 1 goal from open play in his first 20 Premier League games. His shot accuracy has been a far from clinical 34% thus far and he's currently ranked 19th on the scoring chart, of the league' strikers, averaging a goal every 318 minutes.

Fingers crossed that Roberto can at least fluke one in soon and that will give him the confidence to hit a rich vein of goal scoring form...

When we signed him I knew little about him. Everyone said he was purely a poacher which made him a weird signing considering how AVB wanted to play and also how it didn't work very well with Defoe. I thought he would be an upgrade on Defoe if he could prove to be extremely clinical. He hasn't been at all clinical and hasn't even had a hot streak like Defoe sometimes does. Basically he's not been an upgrade at all so far.

It was a signing expecting Bale to be in the side, go back to last season and how many times we got the ball to Bale/Lennon, they countered quickly got wide and either crossed to no one, or no one was there to cross to. That is the side/style Soldado was signed to play for.

He is an upgrade on JD ..

I have given up on him now, I dont boo or shout at players but I cant see him turning into the striker we want. Fingers crossed he proves me wrong and I will hold my hands up

He's been here 6 months now, and I know some players can take longer to settle but I just cant see him improving he still looks the same as day 1, this league just isnt meant for Soldado. At times his touch is fantastic the little flicks you can see he's got great technique.

I would also expect the same from Soldado and I think the vast majority of the time he will do that.

Defoe's 2013 was very similar to Soldado's first half a season of PL football for us. Yet we know Defoe can do much better, I'd say the same about Soldado.

Re: Official - Soldado

Bang on the money. Was there yesterday and he was a huge disappointment again. I cannot see what we have paid £26m for. I have a bet with a mate that he won't score more than 2 league goals to the end of the season.

...interesting bet - what is the over/under for Soldado league goals from open play between now and the end of the season? - I agree it should be about 2 based on his current form and expected playing time, being the 2nd striker on the team sheet behind Ade and only starting in the 4-4-2, or maybe used as a late sub...

We didn't.

We paid £13m up front with a further £13m on incentives.

Still a lot of money but it does give a little perspective.

Where is this from? Transfers aren't all apid upfront but everybody was reporting £26 million when we bought him and a smashing of our transfer record. They wouldn't have been saying that if without incentives, the money was less than our previous record signing.

This £13 million incentives thing has only started very recently.
