I'd be interested in seeing some heatmaps of the teams under AVB and Sherwood that show the gaps that veron23 refers to. It is not something that I have noticed, so it would be helpful to get a clear idea of what he sees the problem being.

I haven't noticed it either much mate, just thankful we actually have players piling forward now, so nice to see targets to aim at in the opposition's box

Southampton's first goal was a pretty good example. As stated before though, I'd rather a gap between defence and midfield than midfield and attack(in most cases anyway).

That's not how most teams play now though. Pretty much everyone brings nine players back to defend and sit in close banks. There's the famous quote from Capello "In the modern game, the only formation is 9-1"

Well I guess we're not most teams then as there have definitely been times when you could've fit the QE2 inbetween our defence and midfield, it's the result of how we're putting more emphasis on the offensive side of our game rather than what we'd seen with AVB. I'm not moaning, I actively wanted Sherwood to be given the job and I've liked what I've seen so far.

Like I said, I'd be interested in seeing some heat maps that illustrate this point.

I suspect that our defence are just sitting deeper at the moment because Verts is out but I would argue that we are still attacking and defending as a unit and that will become more the case when various first teamers return from injury.

I don't get the dislike for Sherwood - who he was 15 years ago is of no consequence to me. I'm enjoying his press conferences and the football he's got the team playing.

My thoughts on Sherwood...

Obviously I am very pleased with results and performances so far and that is ultimately what a manager is judged upon..

I also like what he says though.... He picks up on things that we can see (conceding a goal after scoring) and is not afraid to talk about them openly. He has played at the top level, won the title and so has far more experience to call upon when things are not going right. I can imagine his h/t talk at Man U was 'don't be scared or they'll murder you' whereas AVB might have come out with some technical stuff.

He was fortunate to be able to bring Ade back in and so change our style of play in an instant but he does inspire me with confidence and I so hope he is good 'man manager'.

As to where we finish..... Unless something truly exceptional happens I can't see us getting above Emirates Marketing Project, Scum or Chelscum so we are battling Man U, and both Scousers for 4th. Given he only had half a season it would be unfair and unwise to get rid if we didn't get CL but otherwise were showing genuine signs of improvement. I do feel a good run in the Europa league is vital though and I am pleased we have not got Emirates Marketing Project away next Wednesday!

I'll hold my hands up and admit that I didn't have much faith in Tim's managerial/head-coach-ial ability, but we are actually playing better football. Even if it smells of tactics without strategy, at least he's made the players play again. I will also admit that I am amongst those who have counted him as a bit of a lurking troublemaker ever since the Hoddle era, but now that he is top dog I think it's a win-win situation for us in any case. If he succeeds I couldn't care less about his alleged worming, and if he fails he probably has to pack up and leave anyway.

I'm happy for Tim to prove his worth.

Interesting interview, his focus on winning will hopefully breed a winning mentality.

One point that tallies with the discussion I think that was in this thread a couple of pages back, it seemed the journo at around 8:30 really tried to get him talking about what his system is, or what he is telling the players that is very different from before. I think it just showed that TS is definately keeping the message simpler for the media, compared to what he tells the players. If we are to listen to some people in the game, Daniel Levy is hugely impressed with his ideas and others have said 'he is one of the most forward thinking people in the game'. There's simply no way that is the case if his management consisted only of 'football is simple, get your good players on the ball'. But that was all he was willing to give up.

My question is what'll he do if Ade is off for an extended period of time?? He's been our go to in this current run.

We don't exactly have a ready-made back up for Soldado so i figure he'd still go 1 up top.. maybe just a lot more offensive than AVB

Personally I would just play Lamela off Soldado with the rest of the team staying as it is. I get the feeling Tim wouldn't though, I think he'd perhaps even play Kane up top as a "like-for-like".

Judging by what he has done so far, I would expect him to experiment with playing Kane, Lamela and Chadli in Ade's place and see who works best.

I hope now that Townsend's back he doesn't move Eriksen central and bring Townsend in on the left, would really ruin the balance we have at the moment which I think is pretty spot on.
