I disagree.
Soldado scored one in two against Tblisi. Defoe scored one in two against Tblisi, Tromsø and a weakened Villa side. All 3 games were games where we were the better team on the pitch by a mile.
If AVB thinks that Soldado is the better striker overall than Defoe then it makes sense to keep Soldado starting and assuming that he will find his form. We know how good Defoe is, we've seen for a decade, AVB knows how good Defoe is. A purple patch against Tblisi, Tromsø and Villa doesn't change that.
I mentioned it in another thread, but RvP went through 10 games scoring one goal last season iirc. Should he have been dropped? Did Ferguson send a very bad message out to their entire playing squad? Or did he do the right thing trusting a top player to return to goalscoring form when given time on the pitch?

I find myself changing my mind on this one - Soldado I think is the better all round striker, getting involved in the build up play etc, and once he has settled and used to the team play (once that itself has settled) I think we will see more goals from him.
Defoe though I think at the moment is the better finisher but very inconsistent, but he does get into the right position to finish if that makes sense. Chelsea was a classic example - Bobby was excellent working for the team, being part of Siggy's goal, but Defoe was the one who found himself at the end of the game in the box on his favoured right foot and then tamely side footed it to make it easier for the keeper. I found myself wishing that that had been Bobby not Defoe but them's the breaks.
To be honest as much as I think Soldado and Defoe will score goals for us, I wish we had signed someone like Lukaku - bit more raw but with a physical presence to give us an option. By all rights Ade should be that player but isn't.
With rumours that we're still looking for a striker I would be worried if I was Defoe - I can't see him dislodging Soldado as first choice in the PL unless bobby gets injured and in a world cup year, there's only going to be so many cup games that he can play.

There is a myth that pervades this forum, it relates to Defoe being better for Spurs as an impact player from the bench rather than starting games for us. Interestingly under AVB he has scored 22 goals in 38 starts but only scored once in 13 as a sub, against Emirates Marketing Project. I am not saying he has to start on Sunday, just making an observation

Can't believe Defoe has been with Spurs for 9 long years ! He seems to love Spurs so much ! Even when we sold him to Portsmouth for 1 season, he looked so sad to leave us at the time. And he has a valid reason to regret that move as that was the season we won the CC. You have to feel sorry for him as for all the years he played at Spurs, he has no trophy to show for. Don't think he has ever reached his true potential while at Spurs. Thought he would become a 20-league-goals-a-season striker for us but he never reached that mark. He will be 31 on Monday. Can see Levy selling Defoe at the end of the season if we get good offer.

Interesting observation Naija. 13 sub appearances is a pretty small sample size, if those averaged 20 minutes each it's "only" 260 minutes of football - less than 3 full games. Interesting none the less, I do hope that when Defoe is used as a sub he's used in situations that suit him and us. Not that he's just thrown in because he's a striker and we need goals. That's one of my pet peeves in football actually, just because you need a goal doesn't mean that adding another striker is the right solution.

i just think that defoe does a job, a very narrow job. but when it presents itself he'll finish the job well.
soldado presents better options not just in build up, but from his movement you can see that he can be on the end on some intricate play. it will take the players sometime to get it right, but when it does i can see the floodgates opening too for soldado

The England striker has long been a peripheral figure at Tottenham Hotspur under Andre Villas-Boas and has made just one Premier League start this term.
And, with the January transfer window now eight weeks away, Defoe’s expression of fondness for his former club could well prove timely, especially given the Hammers' shortage of frontmen with record signing Andy Carroll sidelined since the summer with a lingering heel injury.
Defoe signed for West Ham as a 16-year-old in 1999 and was a fans' favourite at the Boleyn Ground until, within 24 hours of the club’s relegation in 2003, he handed in a transfer request.
The striker's popularity duly plummeted and, after spending an ill-disciplined five months in the Championship during which he was sent off three times, he was sold to Spurs for £6milion.
The 31-year-old has since been heckled by the home support on every re-appearance at his old home.
Now, however, it appears that Defoe has extended an olive branch to those fans.
‘It was a massive mistake (to leave West Ham) - I didn’t really want to do it,’ Defoe told ITV4's Sport Life Stories, which is due to air on November 5.
‘The person who represented me at the time said, "You need to hand in a transfer request and get in early because all the lads are going to leave".
‘I remember going in and I was so nervous. It was [then-West Ham chief executive] Paul Aldridge and I gave him the letter and he said, "What’s this?" And I said, "It's a transfer request". He looked at me as if to say, "Are you kidding?"
‘The backlash was crazy. I felt like I was on my own and people were absolutely abusing me.
‘To this day I can imagine West Ham fans look at me and think, "Who does he think he is? How can you do that? You're a Judas". And it's quite sad really because I can honestly say I still love that club.’
However, it would appear West Ham are reluctant to make a move for their former forward, at least on the evidence of Jack Sullivan’s Twitter account, the 11-year-old son of joint-chairman, David.
When asked by one supporter if the club needed someone like Defoe, Sullivan junior replied: ‘Not for 8m and 70k a week’, before adding, ‘he 30 trust me not a good buy’.
Meanwhile, there has been talk of Defoe’s former Spurs team-mate Ryan Nelsen – now in charge of MLS side Toronto – making an approach for the attacker.
'[He is] One of the most natural goalscorers I have ever come across. Always out training, always trying to score, a great guy,’ said Nelsen.
'To get a guy like Defoe for the MLS, I cannot think of many that are more suited. I think if you ask most Premier League teams, they would take Defoe.
'It would be incredible. I call him and text him all the time. Him playing in Toronto would be phenomenal.

Playing Defoe in the EL has achieved nothing: it leads to calls for Defoe to start, even though he hasn't scored in the league for about 150 games, and denies Soldado the chance to bully some defences. Big mistake from AVB there.
